“Grandma, let me take a look, otherwise got the worms... Aww.. it's turns black...”
This is Madam Soo , 77 years old with diabetes over 20 years and dementia in recent years. Her family had been self-dressing for 2 months with no improvement and worsened. Her grandaughter found us online and decided to let us manage it.
I remember the first visit, grandma was anxious and worried. She held my hand tightly. I patiently calmed her down, chatted with her, and she eventually cooperated with the treatment. The wound was severe and required continuous debridement initially. During the treatment, there were instances where the wound worsened due to improper care by family and her tendency to scratch. Multiple small pressure ulcers appeared (3-4 areas). I repeatedly instructed and corrected the family on proper positioning techniques, pressure relief, and simple wound care. With timely guidance and care, the wounds didn't worsen.
The healing took 5 months to heal 😇. After healing, the family expressed gratitude and mentioned they learned a lot. Grandma, with dementia, sometimes gets emotional, and the dressing process involves scolding and shouting. But I treat her like my own grandma, patiently.
As I say, "I want to help her, to make her suffer less pain." 🥰
