When I stepped back, I gave her space to experience boredom, repeat activities, and explore play in her own way.

At first, it felt like I was not doing enough. But in reality, I was learning not to over-manage her play.

In a Montessori-inspired approach, the adult is not meant to entertain the child all the time. The child is capable of creating, exploring, and learning when the environment is prepared and they are given space.

Instead of always jumping in with ideas, I now try to:

Allow boredom without rushing to fix it.
Prepare simple, open-ended materials.
Avoid constantly suggesting new activities.
Observe before stepping in.
Trust repetition instead of always introducing something new.

Sometimes, doing less gives children more.

More space to focus.
More room to imagine.
More confidence to play independently.

When your child says, “I can’t do it,” don’t step in immediately.

Instead, try to pause first.

Give them a moment to see if they can work through it on their own.

Acknowledge how they feel without rushing to fix the problem:

“I can see this feels hard.”
“You’re feeling frustrated because it’s not working yet.”

Then offer support without taking over:

“Would you like a hint?”
“Which part do you want help with?”
“I can show you the first step, then you try.”

This helps children build problem-solving skills, confidence, and independence.

The goal is not to remove every struggle.
It is to help them realise they are capable of trying again.

Check out these fun and engaging activities to help your child use their energy productively.

1. Pouring Water
Set up a small pitcher and cup. Let your child practise pouring water carefully. This helps develop hand-eye coordination and teaches them how to manage small spills.

2. Buttoning & Zipping
Give your child a shirt, jacket, or dressing frame to practise buttoning and zipping. These simple movements help strengthen fine motor skills and independence.

3. Setting the Table
Invite your child to place small plates, cups, utensils, or napkins on the table. This helps them feel involved and teaches responsibility.

4. Matching Socks
After laundry, let your child match pairs of socks. This supports visual discrimination, pattern recognition, and sorting skills.

5. Sweeping Crumbs
Give your child a small broom and dustpan after snack time. It introduces them to caring for their environment in a simple and meaningful way.

6. Peeling a Banana
Show your child how to peel a banana independently. This builds confidence and encourages self-help skills during mealtime.

7. Watering Plants

At some point, I stopped automatically saying “good job” to children.

Not because praise is wrong, but because the way we praise children can shape how they think about effort, mistakes, and motivation.

When children hear “good job” too often, they may start looking for approval from adults instead of noticing their own effort and progress.

Instead of judging the result, try describing what you see:

“You kept trying even when it was difficult.”
“You worked carefully on that.”
“You found another way to solve it.”

This helps children understand that success comes from effort, practice, and problem-solving — not just from getting praise.

You can also ask reflective questions like:

“How did that feel?”
“What part are you proud of?”

Over time, children begin to build confidence from within, not just from hearing approval from others.

Before we rush to wash the dishes for our children, it’s worth remembering that in Montessori, everyday tasks are not interruptions to learning—they are learning.
