PIE (Post-Inflammatory Erythema) and PIH (Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation) are two common types of skin discoloration left behind after acne breakouts, cuts, or inflammation.

🔴 PIE (Post-Inflammatory Erythema)What it is: Flat red, pink, or purplish spots.The Cause: Damaged or dilated tiny blood vessels (capillaries) close to the skin's surface following inflammation.Who gets it: Most common in lighter skin types.The "Glass Test": If you press a clear glass or finger on the spot and it temporarily turns white (blanches), it is PIE.How to treat it: Focus on soothing the skin and repairing blood vessels. Look for calming ingredients like Niacinamide, Azelaic Acid, or soothing antioxidants.
🟤 PIH (Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation)What it is: Dark spots that are brown, dark brown, grey, or black.The Cause: The overproduction of melanin (pigment) as a defense mechanism when the skin is injured or inflamed.Who gets it: Most common and persistent in medium to deep skin tones.The "Glass Test": If you press a clear glass against the spot and the color stays exactly the same, it is PIH.How to treat it: Focus on fading pigment and blocking excess melanin production.
