Zingiber zerumbet (L.) Roscoe ex Sm.

This plant is Lampoyang. It has been traditionally used for generations.

The flower pod contains a natural juice that can be used as a shampoo. In the forest, we simply press the pod to release the juice, apply it to our hair, and leave it on for a while before rinsing.

If you have a headache or migraine, you can gently massage the flower pod over your scalp where the pain is.

The tuber is also edible. You can eat it raw or make it into a tasty sambal.

Lampoyang is a wonderful example of how one forest plant can provide both food and traditional wellness.

Our First Courtesy Visit
Backdated 6 July 2026

For our very first courtesy visit, we chose to visit Sekolah Adat Anak Negeri Sabah (SAANS).

And honestly… (my thoughts), we made the perfect choice.

The place was so peaceful, and President Shalmon Sanangan and his team welcomed us so warmly. They also prepared activities for us, and along the way, so many stories and historical knowledge were shared.

The more we listened, the better it got.

We had such a meaningful discussion about future plans and the possibilities of working together. We left feeling inspired, hopeful and excited about what may come next.

truly hope that what we discussed will grow into something meaningful and successful for both sides.

Sometimes, the first step brings you exactly where you are meant to be.

Nice book! We especially love the back cover. We actually saw that kind of liana myself during my recent forest expedition, it was such a wonderful experience.

Anthony “Tony” Lamb… what a remarkable man and legacy. The last colonial officer of North Borneo, yet also one of Sabah’s great naturalists and storytellers of our flora. Reading about him makes me appreciate our forests even more.

Earlier, from 1–3 July 2026, our expedition team embarked on an exploration and survey for our second potential Forest Herbs Trail of our committee member’s land, at Ranau and continuing into Ulu Sugut.

The purpose of this expedition was to assess the area’s suitability for our upcoming Forest Herbs Trail, documenting the biodiversity, terrain, and potential points of interest along the way.

We are pleased to share that the survey was a success. We successfully secured and prepared a 3-hour Forest Herbs Trail, which will officially welcome our members for guided expeditions by the end of August 2026. This new trail will provide an immersive experience in discovering Sabah’s rich forest herbs, traditional knowledge, and the importance of conserving our natural heritage while promoting conservation and sustainable ecotourism.

Throwback to 30 June 2026, when we have the privilege of attending the Global Biodiversity Day Celebration (Sabah State Level) at Hilton Kota Kinabalu. It was an inspiring gathering of researchers, conservationists, policymakers, and nature enthusiasts, all united by a shared commitment to protecting Sabah’s extraordinary biodiversity.

The event featured insightful discussions on biodiversity conservation, groundbreaking scientific discoveries, and the importance of raising global awareness. It was especially inspiring to learn from experts whose dedication continues to bring Sabah’s unique natural heritage to the international stage.

As President of the North Borneo Herb Growers Association, Sabah, I left the event even more motivated to promote the conservation of our forests, medicinal plants, and traditional knowledge. Together, we can ensure that Borneo’s rich biodiversity continues to thrive, not only for us, but for generations to come.

Harvesting fresh herbs from our own garden to make a nourishing cup of herbal tea. There’s something truly special about picking nature’s goodness straight from the source.

It’s always a blessing to have a garden full of herbs around your home, fresh, sustainable, and always within reach.

And when we work as a team, everything is possible. Together, we grow, we learn, and we create something truly meaningful.
