How we interact with others is often shaped by how we grew up.

Many of the ways we communicate, manage emotions, resolve conflicts, and build relationships are learned through our early experiences. Without realizing it, we may carry these patterns into adulthood and repeat the ways we were treated by parents, caregivers, or other important people in our lives.

Psychologists refer to this as intergenerational transmission of behavior—the tendency for beliefs, behaviors, communication styles, and relationship patterns to be passed down from one generation to the next.

We may inherit patterns, but we are not destined to repeat them. Change begins with recognition; these patterns do not define us forever.

Our brains have an incredible ability to adapt and change throughout life, a process known as neuroplasticity. While some personality traits may be relatively stable, our patterns of thinking, responding, and relating are not fixed. With awareness and consistent practice, we can develop healthier communication styles, improve emotional regulation, set boundaries, and build more supportive relationships.

The first step toward change is awareness. By recognizing harmful patterns in ourselves, we create an opportunity to make different choices and break cycles that may have been passed down for generations.

Social Exhaustion: Why Some Interactions Feel Draining

Social exhaustion is real—it’s the mental fatigue that happens when social interactions demand more emotional and cognitive energy than we have. It’s not about disliking people, but about needing recovery time after connection.

Loneliness is more than being alone—it is the feeling of being emotionally or socially disconnected. A person can be surrounded by others and still feel lonely. It often reflects an unmet need for meaningful connection, not a personal flaw.

Research shows loneliness can affect both mental and physical health, including increased stress, anxiety, depression, poor sleep, and even physical health risks. Over time, it may make people more sensitive to rejection and lead to further withdrawal.

What can help:

1. Challenge negative assumptions about social situations
2. Start with small social interactions
3. Manage stress through mindfulness, breathing, or movement
4. Engage in meaningful activities or community involvement

If loneliness has been persistent, professional support such as talk therapy (psychotherapy or CBT) who can help address the thoughts and patterns that maintain feelings of disconnection.

For Parents:
Is your child often restless, fidgety, or unable to sit still?
Do they struggle to focus, get easily distracted, or have difficulty completing schoolwork?
Do they show frequent irritability, impatience, or emotional outbursts?

For Adults:
Do you find yourself easily distracted, struggling to stay focused, or frequently procrastinating?
Do you feel mentally overwhelmed, disorganized, or unable to follow through on tasks?
Do you experience restlessness, irritability, or difficulty managing emotions?

These may be signs of ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) — it’s not laziness or lack of effort.

After the lights fade, the house becomes quiet again.

Big festive celebrations bring laughter, food, family, and full homes. But when everything ends and everyone returns to their routines, the silence can sometimes feel heavier than expected.

If you’ve ever felt a little lonely or low after a big celebration, you’re not the only one.
