If you keep hearing β€œclose your ribs” in Pilates, this is what your instructor actually wants you to do.

Your rib cage shouldn’t be completely rigid - it needs to move when you breathe.

But when the lower ribs flare forward, it can often come with increased extension through the lower back and make it harder to maintain control through your trunk.

So when you hear β€œclose your ribs”, think:
β†’ Exhale fully
β†’ Let the lower ribs soften down and in
β†’ Keep your pelvis neutral rather than tucking it
β†’ Keep length through your spine
β†’ Maintain that connection as you move, without holding your breath
