This will be one of many posts to commemorate Teachers’ Day.

A year ago, I travelled from Malaysia to Italy with one purpose: to learn.

I had the incredible privilege of learning the macula buckle technique directly from the legendary Dr Barbara Parolini. From lectures and discussions, to observing and assisting in surgery, to sharing meals and stories together, the entire experience left a lasting impact on me both professionally and personally.

Medicine is not only about techniques and technology.
It is also about mentorship, generosity, friendship, and the passing down of knowledge from one generation to another so that patients thousands of miles away may one day benefit from it.

This Teachers’ Day, I want to express my deepest gratitude to Dr Barbara Parolini for opening her doors, sharing her expertise so selflessly, and inspiring me to continue striving to provide better care for my patients.

I returned home not only with new surgical knowledge, but also with renewed purpose and inspiration.

And today, one year later, I can proudly say that many patients in my clinic have already benefitted from this technique.

Had the incredible opportunity today to experience the future of ophthalmic surgery firsthand with the Leica Proveo 8x 3D surgical microscope.

The level of visualization, depth perception, ergonomics, and surgical immersion was honestly on another level. It genuinely feels like stepping 30 years into the future of microsurgery.

Technology like this is not just about looking impressive. It has the potential to redefine precision, improve teaching and collaboration, and ultimately elevate patient care.

What many people do not see are the quiet moments behind the scenes. The comforting words. The patience. The teamwork. The emotional strength it takes to care for others day after day.

To my ophthalmology nurses, thank you for everything you do, seen and unseen. Our patients may remember the surgery or the treatment, but they will always remember how you made them feel.

MSO Interview Feature (Macular Buckle for MTM) Honoured to be featured by the Malaysian Society of Ophthalmology in their recent newsletter, sharing my experience with the macular buckle technique for myopic traction maculopathy.

MTM remains one of the more challenging conditions we face, especially in highly myopic eyes where conventional approaches may not always achieve the desired outcomes.

The macular buckle is a technique that continues to evolve, and one that I have found increasingly valuable in selected cases where addressing posterior pole curvature is key.

Grateful for the opportunity to contribute and to be part of ongoing discussions that push our field forward.

Ultimately, it is about expanding our options so we can offer patients a better chance at meaningful visual recovery.
