Understanding a movement and doing it are different acts, and no sentence, however well crafted, can carry you across.

That crossing happens in your own body, slowly, through sensation and feedback.

Written articles can give you a way of understanding what's happening in the spine, the hips, the breath. They can't give you the practice. Understanding a movement and doing it are different acts, and no sentence, however well crafted, can carry you across. You still need to move

You don't become calm through yoga.

You practise recognising activation, regulating your response to it, and returning towards equilibrium.

Stress is rarely confined to major crises; it routinely manifests through microstressors - daily friction like traffic, misplaced keys, and queues - that quietly accumulate into allostatic load (the physiological wear-and-tear of constant autonomic adaptation). Because allostatic load cannot be clea...

Running out of air doesn't always mean you're out of shape. Fitness isn't the whole story โ€” breathing mechanics and coordination matter too. On the track, in the pool, or on the mat, your breath has to synchronise with your steps, strokes, or transitions.

It happens to almost everyone.

Early afternoon rolls around, and something shifts. Focus softens. Eyelids get heavy. The next task on your list starts to feel strangely enormous.

You might call it a slump. A lull. A crash. Maybe you're not sure which - and that's the first thing worth noticing. A dip is information. A crash is depletion. They ask for different responses, and you can't tell them apart from the outside.

So, what's normal for you?

Your normal is yours. The only way to know it is to pay attention - consistently, honestly, without judgment.

This is where regular yoga practice earns its place - not as a task, but as a signal. A carefully selected practice doesn't just observe the feedback loop. It works inside it.

(Which isn't a case for practising the moment you flag.)

The postures you choose, the breath, the length of the exhale - each one sends a signal the system reads, and over time, listens to. Done thoughtfully, that signal can:

- Support digestion - stimulate the digestive tract, then settle it
- Steady energy - calm the nervous system without draining it; lift it without spiking it
- Shift mood - ease the irritability and fog that ride alongside fatigue.

None of this is dramatic. It isn't a cure. You choose a practice that meets it. To respond, adapt, & recover.

Breath, via the nervous system, prepares the heart for the load of the posture. As each yoga pose generates the load - this demand drives blood flow, delivering oxygen and nutrients in, and clearing byproducts out.

But why do you feel the way you feel during and after practice?

There's a mechanism behind this - nervous system, endocrine system, circadian rhythm - every time. Come find out how it shapes every sequence, and what it's actually doing to your body's systems during, and after class.

Venue: Bon Ton, Vintage Garage
Time: 3.30 p.m. Saturday, 26th September

If an invitation for this talk hasn't found you yet, write in.

Have you ever wondered why you feel a certain way during practice - and a different way, hours later? Same mechanism, two timescales. Nervous system, endocrine system, circadian rhythm. Come find out how sequencing works with all three, not just the one you notice first.

Every class we teach is a beginner class. The fundamentals - alignment, breath - don't change with years of practice.

What changes is the practitioner.

The architecture holds.

Only you move through it differently.

Practice gets difficult when the mind and breath scatter. A focused mind needs less instruction. A scattered one needs more.

That is why a class can be gentle and challenging at the same time.

So the real question was never, โ€œHow advanced am I?โ€

It's : โ€œHow present am I, today?โ€

In chronic stress, the nervous system locks into a pattern where readiness excludes rest - sympathetic dominance. In burnout, it locks into the reverse: rest excludes readiness - a nervous system that's stopped mobilising, not one that's calm.

Breath and intention don't work one after the other. They work concurrently - because rest and readiness are not opposites. Recovery isn't about making the body permanently calm. It's about keeping the capacity to rest without losing readiness - and to become ready without losing the capacity to rest.

Worry is often mistaken for useful work but it functions merely as chronic mental expenditure. While acute stress is a functional survival mechanism designed to activate and swiftly deactivate, modern psychological threats queue continuously without a clean physical completion. This shifts the nervous system from purposeful engagement into persistent agitation.

Yoga practice serves not as a mood adjustment, but as a systemic balance that communicates safety directly to the nervous system.

The physical shape, structure, or design of a body part directly dictates what it can do and how it works.

The spine is curved not by accident, but to absorb shock, distribute load, and protect the spinal cord.

The hip is a ball-and-socket joint not by chance, but to provide both stability and a wide range of motion.

The fascia is continuous not by coincidence, but to transmit force, connect movement, and communicate tension across the whole body.

When we align with our structure, we honor its purpose. When we move with respect for our form, we invite optimal function.

This is why alignment matters - not as an aesthetic ideal, but as a conversation with the body's inherent design.

Yoga does not impose a shape on the body. It reveals the shape the body was always meant to inhabit - and in that revelation, function follows
