🌱 SOY & BREAST CANCER: an update to my previous infographic

Traditional soy foods can be part of a balanced diet for people living with or beyond breast cancer. There's no need to stop or fear soy: current evidence shows moderate amounts (2–3 servings a day) are safe, including for women with hormone-sensitive (ER+) breast cancer.

Why isn't soy the same as oestrogen?
Soy contains isoflavones, a type of phytoestrogen. They can bind the same receptors as our own oestrogen, but they don't behave the same way. Your body has two oestrogen receptors. In lab studies:

đź”´ ER-alpha tends to promote cell growth
🟢 ER-beta tends to counterbalance ER-alpha

Soy isoflavones preferentially bind ER-beta 🟢, and their effects are weaker and more context-dependent than the body's own oestrogen. This is one reason dietary soy behaves so differently.

What the evidence shows
âś… Studies of breast cancer survivors link soy foods to lower recurrence, even in women taking tamoxifen or aromatase inhibitors.
⚠️ High-dose soy or isoflavone supplements are a different story and are not recommended.

What to enjoy 🥢
1 serving is about:
• 1 cup (250 ml) unsweetened soy milk
• ½ cup (about 80 g) tofu or tempeh
• ½ cup edamame

Enjoy 2–3 servings a day, based on your preferences, overall diet and tolerance.

I met Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali only once in person 3 years ago shortly upon my return to Malaysia from the UK, we talked about breast cancer. We have something similar. We were both affected breast cancers. She was diagnosed at 92, I was diagnosed at 47.

Today, as Malaysia mourns her passing, I feel privileged to have had that small moment with her.

A pioneering doctor. A woman who devoted her life to public health and the wellbeing of women and children. And, in her own words:

“Health checks is our responsibility while we are still healthy, before we can look after others.”

At 100, she leaves behind a remarkable legacy of service, grace and compassion.

May she rest in peace. 🤍
