Her insurance agent brought her to me…
A nice lady in her 30’s with no illnesses. She noticed gradual distension of her abdomen. She saw a few local gynaecologists who diagnosed her with a huge abdomino-pelvic mass, unable to ascertain the origin — whether huge fibroids or an ovarian tumour. She was offered open surgery with a midline incision. She was not ready for a long wound on her tummy, knowing the recovery would be more painful and slower.
Her insurance agent brought her all the way from another state to see me.
I assessed her carefully, taking my time to scan with ultrasound. I concluded that these were multiple huge fibroids arising from the back of the uterus and cervix. The locations were odd — the mass basically filled the entire pelvic cavity, leaving minimal access for removal.
We discussed the findings, I drew it on paper to help her understand better. We decided on laparoscopic myomectomy, as I saw a high possibility of success laparoscopically.💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
The operation went well, without any complications. 😎😎😎
The decision for laparoscopy instead of open surgery (the “easy way out”) was not to satisfy my ego. This was a decision made from careful assessment, 200% planning, and meticulous intra-operative manoeuvres. It was not a 50-50 gamble 👎👎❌❌— patient safety is always my priority✅✅👍👍❤️❤️. If I had hesitated, I would have said we go for open surgery without a second thought.
