WHY FOOD FEELS LIKE A REWARD AT NIGHT
This creates false hunger. Marco Lee 2026
Food temporarily: • Anchors the Shen 神
• Creates warmth and comfort
• Feels like emotional closure
But the effect lasts 10–20 minutes.
Then the craving returns — often stronger.
That’s why evening snacking never stops at one bite.
⚠️ THE REAL PROBLEM (IMPORTANT)
Most evening eating is NOT real hunger.
It is:
**Heart–Shen 心-神 unrest
conditioned reward-seeking**
You are not hungry.
Your Heart is tired and your mind wants comfort.
✅ THE CORRECT STRATEGY (KEY INSIGHT)
Do NOT fight hunger.
👉 Replace the reward channel.
Fighting creates tension.
Replacing settles the system.
🌙 TCM NIGHT HUNGER PROTOCOL ( after 6:30 pm)
1️⃣ FIRST RESPONSE (always do this first)
Before eating anything, do ONE of these
and wait 10–15 minutes:
• A few sips of hot water
• Warm barley water / congee
• Hold warm water in the mouth briefly, then swallow
If hunger fades → false hunger
If hunger stays → eat (see below)
🍲 2️⃣ WHAT TO EAT ( IF YOU REALLY NEED FOOD)
Keep it small, warm, soft, cooked:
• 3–5 spoonfuls barley congee
• Plain rice congee (a little salt)
• Steamed apple or pear (warm)
• Thin vegetable soup (no oil)
👉 STOP AT 70% FULL
Relief = correct
Full = too much
🚫 3️⃣ WHAT NOT TO EAT AT NIGHT
Even if it’s “healthy”:
• Raw fruit
• Citrus
• Yogurt
• Nuts
• Bread
• Cold salads
• Protein shakes
These weaken digestion and promote fat storage at night.
🫷 4️⃣ ACUPRESSURE TO STOP CRAVINGS
Neiguan (内关)
• 3 finger widths above wrist crease
• Between the two tendons
• Calms Shen, stops compulsive eating
Zusanli (足三里)
• 4 finger widths below kneecap
• One finger width outside shinbone
• Strengthens Spleen, prevents rebound hunger
Press 1–2 minutes in a pulsating fashion per side, slow breathing.
⏳ 5️⃣ THE 20-MINUTE RULE
Cravings peak and fall in ~20 minutes.
TCM logic: • If you eat → desire escalates
• If you wait → desire settles
Delay breaks the loop.
😴 6️⃣ SLEEP TIMING MATTERS
• Finish eating 2 hours before bed
• Light hunger = fat-burning mode
• Full stomach = storage mode
📜 CLASSICAL TCM LINE
夜不食饱,脾自化湿
If you don’t eat to fullness at night,
the Spleen transforms dampness by itself.
⚠️ WHEN NIGHT HUNGER IS REAL
Eat if you have: • Dizziness
• Shaking
• Cold sweat
• Clear weakness
That is Qi deficiency, not craving.
Warm congee is correct. No guilt.
📺 EVENING SHEN–HABIT PROTOCOL (TV & PHONE)
This is where most people fail.
Before TV (2–5 min):
• Warm water
• Face wash with warm water
• Brief Neiguan pressure
Signals: “The day is complete.”
👐 DURING TV — CRUCIAL RULE
❗ NEVER SIT EMPTY-HANDED
Empty hands trigger reward-seeking.
Instead:
• Hold a warm cup with both hands
• Hold a soft stone or beads.
• Slow barefoot foot massage
This anchors the Shen without food.
❌ ONE RULE THAT MUST NEVER BE BROKEN
Never snack directly from a bag or bowl while watching TV.
This creates a Shen–habit loop TCM calls:
欲动而不自知
Desire moving without awareness.
🧠 WHAT TO EXPECT
• Days 1–3: urges weaker
• Days 4–7: urges fade faster
• 7–10 days: TV no longer triggers hunger
This is Shen retraining, not willpower.
🔒 FINAL LINE (SAVE THIS)
Night eating is not hunger.
It is the Heart seeking peace.
