Pain got worse after treatment? That doesn’t mean something’s wrong.

We treated a patient with tennis elbow. A few sessions in, they noticed the pain had actually increased.

It’s a fair thing to worry about. But most of the time, it’s not a bad sign.

Here’s why. Your body doesn’t heal in a straight line. An area that’s been stiff or guarded for months needs time to “wake up” again. Your therapist is working directly on tissue that hasn’t moved properly in a while. Even your herbal patch needs a few applications before it really settles in.

So no, treatment isn’t failing. It’s usually just getting started.

Here’s something most people don’t know: muscle, tendon, and ligament don’t heal at the same speed. Muscle recovers quickly, soreness settles within days. Tendons and ligaments get far less blood supply, so healing takes much longer, months rather than days. Nothing’s wrong. It’s just how these tissues are built.

In the full article, we cover:
✅ The 3 real reasons your pain increases early in treatment
✅ Why tendons and ligaments take so much longer to heal than muscle
✅ What’s normal vs. what needs your therapist’s attention
✅ The 3-phase treatment plan every YCK patient follows, and why finishing it matters

That old injury isn’t back because you’re falling apart. 🦵

You bend down for something. You step off a kerb slightly wrong. And a knee or a back you haven’t thought about in fifteen years suddenly lights up.

Most people assume they’ve re-injured themselves. Usually they haven’t.

Here’s what’s actually going on: recovery from an injury is three things, not one. The pain fades, the tissue repairs, and the strength comes back. But the pain almost always stops before the other two are finished. So you move on, feeling fine, while underneath the job was only half done.

When you’re young, your body quietly covers for that weak spot. Strong muscles pick up the slack. As the years go by, that hidden support fades, and the weak spot finally shows itself.

The injury didn’t get worse. Your body’s ability to hide it did.
The good news: it’s rebuildable. A weak spot from twenty years ago is not permanent, and properly rehabilitated injuries often never come back at all.

In the full article we cover:
✅ Why pain stopping doesn’t mean healing finished
✅ Why old injuries wait until your 50s to resurface
✅ Why the old spot genuinely swells, with no new injury
✅ Real patient stories, including a 20-year back problem settled in 14 sessions

Rest it or move it? 🦵

If your knee hurts, you’ve probably been told both “stay off it” and “keep moving.” Confusing, right?

Here’s the truth: they’re not opposites. They’re two tools for two different moments. Rest calms an inflamed, swollen knee. The right exercises rebuild the muscles and ligaments that protect it. The whole skill is knowing which moment you’re in.

Most people get the timing wrong. They rest when they should be strengthening, or push hard when the joint needs to settle. And that one mistake is often what turns a manageable knee into one heading for surgery.

In our latest article we break down:
✅ How to read your own knee pain (and the one word that tells you when to stop)
✅ Why the old “ice it” advice has been overturned
✅ The exercises that build a knee up instead of wearing it down
✅ Real stories from patients who learned the timing the hard way

After more than 47 years and 50,000+ patients, we’ve seen what happens when you get this right — and when you don’t.

If your knee has started predicting rain better than the weather app, you are not alone.
A lot of Malaysians notice the same thing:
cold offices, rainy afternoons, shopping malls with freezing aircon… and suddenly the same shoulder, knee, or back starts acting up again.
Turns out there is real research behind this. But the weather is only part of the story.

Most people with a slipped disc are told to rest and wait.
But the evidence tells a different story.
In many cases:
• the disc can improve on its own
• movement is part of recovery
• and the way treatment is combined matters more than people realise
We break this down in detail—including what we’ve observed from treating these cases over time.

We’ve all watched those cracking videos.

The loud pop.
The instant reaction.
That strange, satisfying feeling like something just got “fixed.”

But what if that sound isn’t what you think it is?

In this article, we break down what actually happens inside the joint when it cracks, why it feels so convincing, and how social media quietly trained us to mistake drama for effectiveness.

The crack is real.
The biology is quieter.
And recovery rarely trends.

When Yap Shu Shen treated kung fu students in the 1940s, there was no marketing.
No demonstrations. No “before and after” moments.

If someone got better, they told a friend — and they didn’t just say “this worked.”
They talked about where the pain was, how it started, how long it took, and what recovery actually looked like.

⭐️That context mattered.

When his son, Yap Chan Kor ran the clinic from 1979 onwards, it was the same.
People didn’t choose treatments because they were loud or dramatic.
They chose them because they recognised their own experience in someone else’s story.

Today, that filter is mostly gone.

Social media doesn’t reward context — it rewards spectacle.
The loudest crack. The biggest reaction. The fastest relief.

Sometimes those moments feel good.
But a moment isn’t the same as recovery.

After more than a decade watching real patients — not videos — one thing is clear:
Pain doesn’t need the loudest solution.
It needs the right one.

This is part of an ongoing series on understanding pain beyond trends, hype, and viral moments.

Last week, a patient declined treatment for her frozen shoulder because we didn’t offer the “shoulder adjustment” she saw on TikTok.

She wasn’t being difficult. She just expected what she’d seen online to work instantly.

But frozen shoulder doesn’t work like that. Most chronic pain doesn’t.

Here’s what social media gets right—and what it leaves out.

Swipe to understand why dramatic “fixes” feel so convincing (and why they rarely stick) 👉

Why does one treatment help…
and another make things worse?

After treating pain for decades, one thing is clear:
pain isn’t one thing.

Some pain is driven by irritated tissue.
Some by sensitive or compressed nerves.
Some by a nervous system that’s been on high alert for too long.

Each responds differently — which is why chasing single “solutions” often leads to frustration.

At YCK, we look at what’s driving the pain, then combine the right tools — inflammation control, movement therapy, and gradual rehabilitation — instead of relying on just one approach.

Understanding your pain is often the first real step toward improving it.
