"Why is my child always chewing on things?"

This is a concern we hear from parents.

While chewing can sometimes be a simple habit or part of typical development, it may also serve a purpose for some children. For example, chewing may help them cope with stress, stay alert, or seek sensory input that supports regulation.

Rather than focusing only on stopping the behaviour, it can be helpful to first understand why it is happening.

Ask yourself:
🦷 When does the chewing occur?
🦷 Is it during homework, waiting, or transitions?
🦷 Does it happen when your child is excited, worried, or tired?

Every behaviour has a reason, and understanding that reason allows us to provide support that is both meaningful and appropriate.

Occupational therapists look beyond the behaviour to understand the child's underlying needs and how these may be affecting participation in everyday activities.
