Rejected at 50? Morris Chang Proved the World Wrong.
There’s a common belief in the corporate world that once you pass 50, your best years are behind you. Many employers quietly assume that younger is better, and applicants over 50 often find themselves overlooked—even when they have decades of experience. It’s as if your résumé suddenly starts collecting Medicare brochures instead of job offers!
That was the reality Morris Chang faced.
After spending 25 years at Texas Instruments, he was passed over for the company’s top leadership position. After 26 years of loyal service, many people would have accepted the disappointment, polished their retirement plans, and started practicing their golf swing.
But Morris Chang had other ideas.
Instead of giving up, he packed his bags, moved to Taiwan, and started over.
At 56 years old—an age when many people are told they’re “past their prime”—he founded Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC).
His idea was simple but revolutionary.
Rather than designing computer chips, TSMC would manufacture chips for other companies. Many experts doubted the business model.
Today, TSMC has become one of the most important companies in the world, producing approximately 90% of the world’s most advanced semiconductor chips. These tiny chips power our smartphones, cars, medical equipment, data centers, and the artificial intelligence technologies that are reshaping our future.
What if Morris Chang had concluded, “I guess my opportunity has passed”?
The world would be a very different place.
His story reminds us that being overlooked is not the same as being finished. Sometimes rejection isn’t God’s way of saying “No.” It’s His way of saying, “I have something much bigger waiting for you.”
Age doesn’t determine your potential.
A setback doesn’t define your future.
And one closed door may simply be pointing you toward the entrance of your greatest achievement.
So if you’re over 50 and wondering whether your best days are behind you, remember Morris Chang.
Your next chapter may be the one that changes the world.
Never let someone else’s “No” become your final answer 🇹🇼🫶🔥🥰
