EDUCATIONAL VISIT FROM UNIVERSITAS DIPONEGORO, INDONESIA

19 May 2026 - The Department of Shariah Compliance, SASMEC had the pleasure of welcoming an educational visit from nursing students of Universitas Diponegoro, Indonesia as part of their Student Exchange Programme (Inbound Mobility) through the Kulliyyah of Nursing, IIUM.

The delegation consisted of five nursing students, accompanied by a lecturer from Universitas Diponegoro and a lecturer from the Kulliyyah of Nursing, IIUM. During their visit to SASMEC , the group had the opportunity to explore several departments within the hospital, including the Department of Shariah Compliance.

The main objective of the visit was to gain insight into hospital medical operations, particularly in nursing practices, and to understand how a Shariah-compliant hospital operates as part of their teaching and learning process. The session also provided exposure to the implementation of Shariah principles in healthcare services and patient care management.

Following the visit to the Department of Shariah Compliance, the delegation is scheduled to continue their educational tour to the Department of Emergency & Trauma and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on the following day.

SHARIAH ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAC) MEETING NO. 1/2026

5th May 2026 – The Shariah Advisory Committee (SAC) Meeting No. 1/2026 was successfully convened at Conference Room, SASMEC . The meeting was chaired by the Hospital Director, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mohamed Saufi Awang, who also serves as the Chairman of the SAC.

The meeting was attended by members of the SAC, including Sahibus Samahah Prof. Dato’ Dr. Asmadi Mohamed Naim, M***i of Pahang; Prof. Dato’ Dr. Zawawi Ismail, Vice Chancellor of UniQSAAS; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Abdul Bari Awang from the Abdul Hamid Abu Sulayman Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge & Human Sciences; and Prof. Dr. Omar Hasan Kasule from King Fahd Medical City, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia Also in attendance were the directors (Medical, Surgical, Clinical Support and Administration).

The session brought together representatives from the Halimatussa’dia Mother’s Milk Centre (HMMC), Dr. Ainol Suraya Ismail and Prof. Dato’ Dr. Hamizah Ismail, as well as the Reproductive Unit SASMEC (RUS), represented by Dr. Nurul Yaqin Mohd Nor and Dr. Azha Syahril Azizan. Both teams presented important agenda items for deliberation, focusing on critical areas such as issues related to the milk bank and fertility management from a Shariah perspective.

In addition, the Department of Shariah Compliance tabled several key initiatives, including proposed improvements to operation theatre attire in line with Shariah requirements, as well as efforts to strengthen training for clinical staff, alongside the reporting of routine activities and Shariah-related issues from January to April.

The meeting served as a valuable platform for constructive discussion and reinforced SASMEC ’s ongoing commitment to upholding Shariah-compliant healthcare practices.

BENCHMARKING VISIT TO SURAU AD-DEENIAH, PUSAT PERUBATAN UNIVERSITI MALAYA (PPUM)

14th April 2026 - The Department of Shariah Compliance, Sultan Ahmad Shah Medical Centre (SASMEC ) successfully conducted a benchmarking visit to Surau Ad-Deeniah at Pusat Perubatan Universiti Malaya (PPUM) on Tuesday, 14 April 2026. The visit was specifically organized to study the janazah management system implemented at PPUM, which is recognized for its systematic approach and extensive experience in handling janazah rites within a hospital setting. By observing these established procedures, the Department of Shariah Compliance delegation aimed to identify best practices and standard operating procedures that can be integrated to further enhance Shariah-compliant services at their own institution.

The delegation consisted of five members from the Department of Shariah Compliance and was led by Ustaz Abdul Rahman Al-Azmi. Upon arrival, the group was warmly received by Ustaz Mohd Shazni bin Abdullah, the Head of the Islamic Affairs Department at PPUM, alongside several other staff members.

It is hoped that the insights gained from this benchmarking visit will provide significant benefits to SASMEC as they strive to uphold the highest standards of Shariah compliance. The collaboration between the two medical centers highlights the importance of knowledge sharing in the pursuit of better service for the community.
