Chemists have an important role to play in supporting Sarawak’s transition towards a green economy.

In stating this, Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability, Datuk Hazland Abang Hipni, acknowledged contributions made by the Sarawak branch of Institut Kimia Malaysia (IKM) to the development of chemistry and scientific excellence in the state.

The Institut Kimia Malaysia (IKM) Sarawak Branch celebrated its 40th Anniversary Chemistry Night (Zirconium Jubilee) on 20 June 2026 at the Grand Margherita Hotel, Kuching, under the theme “Chrome & Crimson.” The event gathered over 200 members and guests to commemorate four decades of contributions to the chemistry profession in Sarawak.

The celebration was officiated by Datuk Dr Haji Hazland bin Haji Abang Hipni, who praised the branch’s growth since its establishment in 1986. He highlighted its remarkable progress from 25 founding members to a thriving professional community of more than 500 members today.

A special anniversary montage showcased the branch’s history and leadership, honouring past chairpersons including Chan Woon Peng, Dr Lau Seng, Dr Alvin Chai Lian Kuet, and Dr John Chan, while recognizing the leadership of current chairman Prof. Dr Sim Siong Fong. The event celebrated IKM Sarawak’s legacy of scientific excellence, professional development, and service to the chemistry community.
