𝟏𝟗 𝐉𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐢 𝐕𝐞𝐫𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐇𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐥

On 19 July 2025, Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) conducted its first fire drill exercise at Serapi Verdure Hotel, located within the SGH compound. This important safety initiative was led 𝐖𝐞𝐢𝐝𝐚 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 (𝐖𝐞𝐢𝐝𝐚 𝐈𝐅𝐌), the SGH concession company, in collaboration with:

SGH Assistants Medical Officer (AMO) Unit
SGH Occupational Safety & Health (OSH) Unit
One Medicare Sdn Bhd (OMSB)
Balai Bomba dan Penyelamat Batu Lintang

The fire drill aimed to test the hotel's emergency response capabilities, enhance staff preparedness, and evaluate evacuation procedures in the event of a real emergency.

🚨 During the drill, two response vehicles from the Fire and Rescue Department — including a fire engine and a Bomba ambulance — were deployed. This allowed the team to assess the response time from Balai Bomba Batu Lintang to SGH, which is critical in real emergency scenarios.

✅ The exercise was successfully carried out, with the hotel staff showing commendable readiness and coordination throughout the simulation. Guests and residents of the hotel were also involved, and many expressed appreciation for being included in the awareness and preparedness effort.

This drill reinforces SGH's ongoing commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being not only of patients and staff, but also of visitors, residents, and everyone within our hospital grounds. The scenario was executed as realistically as possible to simulate actual emergency conditions.

KUCHING: Sarawak has taken a bold step towards becoming a regional leader in healthcare safety with the successful implementation of the state’s first-ever Professional Healthcare Facility Fire Safety Management Training, recently held at Sarawak General Hospital (SGH).

Sarawak leads the way in hospital safety with its first-ever fire safety training for healthcare facilities, held at SGH and joined by 135 participants statewide.

14–15 July 2025, Sarawak General Hospital:
For the first time in Sarawak and in Malaysia a Professional Healthcare Facility Fire Safety Management Training was successfully conducted at Sarawak General Hospital (SGH). This landmark event brought together 135 participants from across Sarawak, representing a diverse range of disciplines, including doctors, assistant medical officers (AMOs), nurses, environmental health officers (EHOs), concession company safety personnel, private hospital safety coordinators, and other related fields.

This training was made possible through the strong collaboration between the AMO Supervisory Unit and the OSH Unit of SGH, with crucial support from DOSH Sarawak, Bomba Sarawak HQ, JKR Sarawak, and One Medicare Sdn. Bhd. (OMSB). It marked a major step forward in fire safety capacity building within the healthcare sector.

Participants were exposed to a comprehensive approach to fire safety management—covering awareness, preparedness, response protocols, hands-on fire drills, incident reporting, and relevant legal frameworks and regulations. The training also included discussions on future fire safety planning in Sarawak.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the Sarawak State Health Department (JKNS) for their full support. As part of our commitment to building a statewide safety culture, the organizing committee proudly sponsored 10 seats for JKNS representatives, helping to further promote awareness and strengthen program outreach across Sarawak.

This event marks a new era in positioning Sarawak as a Healthcare Safety Hub—not only for Malaysia, but also within Southeast Asia.

𝐊𝐞𝐦 𝐏𝐮𝐞𝐡, 𝐒𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐧: From 28th to 30th April 2025, lead by Mr Mohd Saifullah Affandi, successfully organized the Kem Motivasi & Team Building PPK 2025 at Kem Pueh, Sematan. The three-day program was exclusively attended by Pembantu Perawatan Kesihatan (PPK) staff and aimed to enhance team spirit, discipline, resilience, and personal development among participants.

Throughout the program, participants were engaged in a series of well-planned activities such as motivational sessions, team-building exercises, leadership games, morning drills, and reflective night discussions. These activities were designed to build trust, improve communication, and reinforce the values of professionalism and teamwork in delivering healthcare support services.

Set against the refreshing and peaceful environment of Kem Pueh, the camp provided a much-needed break from the hospital routine, allowing participants to reconnect with one another and refocus on their roles as vital frontline support personnel.

The program was made possible through the dedication and commitment of the organizing committee from all PPP & PPK Services Unit, with full support from the hospital management. Special appreciation goes to all facilitators, committee members, and every PPK participant who contributed to the success of this meaningful program.

May the spirit of unity, self-improvement, and collaboration nurtured during these three days continue to grow and bring positive impact to our healthcare delivery at Sarawak General Hospital.

Hospital Bau: 𝗭𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝘁 𝗕𝗮𝘂 𝗛𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹

Bau Hospital has successfully conducted a zonal modular fire drill involving the Paediatric and Maternity wards, as part of its continuous efforts to enhance fire safety awareness and emergency preparedness. This initiative was held under the South Sarawak Cluster Hospital framework through the collaboration of the OSH Unit, Fire Safety Officer (FSO), and the Fire Safety Committee.

The drill aimed to test and improve the readiness of ward staff in responding to fire emergencies, ensuring that evacuation procedures and safety protocols are well understood and effectively executed.

We extend our sincere appreciation to all staff involved—especially the nurses, matrons, and ward sisters—for their full commitment and cooperation. Special thanks to Mr. Stanley, Chief Medical Assistant and OSH in-charge at Bau Hospital, for his strong leadership and coordination, along with the OMC unit for their vital support.

Led by Dr. Anantha Kumar Rajendran and Hospital Chief Supervisor Haji Othman Bin Buang, this drill reflects the lead hospital’s dedication to implementing best practices and maintaining high safety standards. A fire safety program was successfully conducted under the South Sarawak Cluster Hospital initiative, organized through the collaboration between the OSH Unit, Fire Safety Officer (FSO), and the Fire Safety Committee.

We would like to express our sincere appreciation to all staff involved—especially the nurse matron and sisters—for their dedication and support. Special thanks also go to the Chief Medical Assistant (PPP) Mr. Nickson of Lundu Hospital, as well as the Deputy Director, Dr. Christ, for their strong leadership and cooperation and One Medicare team as they active involvement during the drill.

In conjunction with this program, the lead hospital team—headed by Dr. Anantha Kumar Rajendran and Hospital Chief Supervisor Haji Othman Bin Buang—also successfully conducted a zonal modular fire drill across all three wards in Lundu Hospital.

This initiative reflects the lead hospital’s commitment to maintaining high standards by adhering to best practices in fire safety and emergency preparedness. The success of this program and the zonal modular drill at Lundu Hospital demonstrates the effectiveness of proactive leadership, cross-departmental collaboration, and staff readiness. It is our hope that this model sets a benchmark and inspires all hospitals under the South Sarawak Cluster—particularly those aligned with Sarawak General Hospital—to continuously elevate their standards, ensuring a safer, more resilient, and compliant healthcare environment for both staff and patients.

Special thanks to Dr. Anantha Kumar Rajendra, Head of Unit for OSH SGH, and Mr. Othman Bin Buang, Head of PPP Services, for organizing the Abseiling & High-Rise Rescue Training. In collaboration with the Malaysia Civil Defence Force (APM) Kuching, we successfully trained 40 SGH staff members from various designations and departments.

It was a valuable and memorable experience for everyone involved. This marks not only a significant milestone for both departments but also a major step forward for SGH’s fire safety efforts, led by Mr. Othman, our Fire Safety Officer, and overall OSH management under Dr. Anantha Kumar.

This is one of the first high-rise rescue trainings ever conducted in a KKM hospital, and we are proud to lead the way. With this foundation, our aim is to become a benchmark for hospital emergency preparedness across Malaysia.

The training was conducted by certified experts in rescue and abseiling, ensuring that our team receives the best in skill and knowledge. More impactful training sessions are coming soon!

The Clinical Audit was successfully conducted from 9th to 10th September 2024 by a dedicated team of 6 Penolong Pegawai Perubatan (PPP) from Hospital Bau, Sarawak. The audit aimed to assess and improve the quality of clinical practices and patient care standards. Through their thorough review and evaluation, the team worked collaboratively with hospital staff to ensure that procedures are in line with best practices and continuously enhance the healthcare services provided.

Their efforts contribute greatly to advancing clinical excellence and patient safety. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to the PPP team from Hospital Bau for their professionalism and commitment during this audit.
