There’s a white glow in your child’s eye in a photo? It’s worth getting it checked.
Most of the time, camera flash causes a red reflection from the back of the eye. But if one eye appears white, yellow, or unusually bright instead of red, it may be a sign of a condition called leukocoria (white pupil reflex).
⚠️ Leukocoria can occur in babies and children and may be associated with conditions such as:
Congenital cataracts
Retinal disorders
Coats disease
Retinoblastoma (a rare childhood eye cancer)
If you notice a persistent or repeated white glow in one or both eyes, seek a comprehensive eye examination as soon as possible.

Because colour vision deficiency (CVD) is much less common in girls, they may be less likely to be screened or suspected of having the condition. As a result, some girls learn to adapt and compensate without realising they see colours differently. They may struggle with:
🎨 Art and colouring activities
📊 Colour-coded schoolwork
🗺️ Reading maps and charts
🚦 Recognising certain colour signals
A simple colour vision assessment, such as Ishihara test, can help identify CVD early. Early detection allows parents and teachers to better understand a child's needs, provide appropriate support, and reduce unnecessary frustration in school and everyday activities.

🏠 Can parents perform a cover test at home?

Yes, parents can do a simple observation at home. However, it should not replace a professional eye examination.

Home testing has some limitations:
👓Small eye turns can be difficult to notice
👓Children may not cooperate consistently
👓Results can be easily misinterpreted
👓Hidden eye alignment problems may be missed

If you notice one eye moving when the cover is switched, or have concerns about your child’s eye alignment, arrange a comprehensive eye examination for a proper assessment. 💙

When a child doesn't get enough Vitamin A, they may experience:
⚠️ Difficulty seeing at night or in low-light conditions
⚠️ Dry, irritated eyes
⚠️ Increased risk of eye infections
⚠️ Poor overall eye health
Vitamin A deficiency can often be prevented through a balanced diet with foods such as carrots, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, eggs, papaya, mangoes, and dark leafy greens.
Healthy eating habits today can help protect your child's vision for years to come. If you're concerned about your child's eye health, schedule a comprehensive eye examination with VISTA Kids. 💙

Food for healthier eyes! A guide for Malaysian parents.
🐟 Ikan kembung (mackerel), sardines, and salmon: Rich in omega-3 fatty acids to support retinal health and reduce dry eyes
🥬 Bayam, kangkung, sawi, and broccoli: Contain lutein and zeaxanthin, which help protect the eyes from harmful light exposure
🥚 Eggs: A convenient source of vitamin A, lutein, and zeaxanthin, with vitamin A supporting healthy vision, especially in low-light conditions 🌽 Corn and peas: Additional sources of eye-protective nutrients

Encourage your child to enjoy a colourful variety of foods. We’re lucky to live in one of the world’s food havens, with plenty of healthy choices to explore!

Does your child need an eye patch? 🩹
When one eye sees better than the other, the brain may start relying more on the stronger eye and ignore the weaker one. Over time, this can lead to reduced vision in the weaker eye, a condition known as amblyopia or "lazy eye."
Eye patch therapy works by covering the stronger eye, encouraging the weaker eye to work harder and build stronger visual connections with the brain.
If you notice any concerns with your child’s vision, get their eyes checked early. If an eye patch has been prescribed, follow the doctor’s instructions and stay consistent. Regular patching can help support better vision development for the future.

Myopia is becoming increasingly common among Malaysian children.
One contributing factor? Increased near-work activities such as using smartphones, tablets, and other digital devices, together with reduced time spent outdoors.
Help protect your child's vision by:
✅ Limiting recreational screen time
✅ Encouraging daily outdoor activities
✅ Practising regular screen breaks
✅ Scheduling regular eye examinations

Small daily habits can make a big difference in supporting your child’s eye health.

❌NO SCREEN TIME BEFORE BEDTIME ❌

Excessive screen use among children can make them feel irritable, tired and less-focused, especially when it happens close to bedtime. That “one more video” habit may affect their sleep more than you think. Screen use before bed can make it harder for children to wind down and get quality rest.

Parents can help by:
✨ Reducing screen time 1–2 hours before bedtime
✨ Keeping devices out of bed
✨ Replacing screen time with reading or calming activities

Some children resist wearing glasses because they think:
“I can still see okay.”
But children often adapt to blurry vision without realising how much effort their eyes are actually using. 👀
When vision is uncorrected, their eyes may need to work harder to maintain focus.
Glasses help reduce that strain by correcting how light enters the eye and focuses onto the retina.
Parents can help by:
✨ Letting children choose frames they love
✨ Explaining how glasses help their eyes
✨ Normalizing glasses in a positive way
✨ Praising consistency instead of scolding resistance
Wearing glasses can be cool and trendy when you frame it the right way .
