Emotions and anticipating anxiety can be overwhelming to the point where blood pressure is artificially high when measured in hospital, a condition called whitecoat hypertension.

In situations like these, it is more accurate to be guided by their home readings hence why we do not jump into conclusions with just one figure.

Disclaimer: I do not have a crystal ball that can transcend space and time. Nor do I have the ability to teleport.

We received a text message regarding one of our patients who had been having pain in her ‘liver’. She self organised her own blood test then forwarded us the results asking what to do next and what meds to take. She lives out of town. We told her she needs to see her local doctor to be properly examined and manged but she refused and wanted reassurance all is ok.

Why is this inappropriate?

1. She has a new unexpected and unexplained pain in her abdominal region that houses many other organs apart from her liver. In fact, last we checked recently, there was no active disease in the liver.

2. Any investigations including blood tests should be ordered by a medical doctor within clinical context so that the right investigation can be properly arranged then interpreted accordingly and accurately.

3. Expectation for doctors to work like artificial intelligence without even seeing the patient is outright ridiculous and dangerous.

4. She asked for advice. We gave her advice. Just because she does not like it does not mean we need to pander to unsafe clinical practices.

Even if you are the King of England, I would still respond similarly in these situations.

Just realised it has passed 5 years since our oppa buaya has been diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer 💪💪💪

Hope he is continuing to have a good time celebrating the ‘all clear’ 🥳🥳🥳💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻
