Eating more fiber but still constipated?
Don’t forget its important partner: fluids. 💧🌾
A lot of people hear “constipation” and immediately think:
“Eat more fiber lah.”
But fiber works much better when your body is getting enough fluids too. NIDDK specifically recommends drinking enough liquids to help fiber work better.
Think of it this way:
🌾 Fiber helps add structure and bulk to your stool.
💧 Fluids help keep things softer and easier to pass.
If you suddenly increase fiber but your fluid intake stays low, your bowel movement may still feel hard or uncomfortable.
So if you’re always:
🚽 Sitting in the toilet for a long time
😣 Straining to pass motion
🪨 Having hard, dry stools
🎈 Feeling bloated or “stuck”
Don’t only look at fiber.
Try looking at your whole routine:
🥬 Get fiber from vegetables, fruits, beans and whole grains
💧 Drink enough fluids throughout the day
🚶 Keep your body moving
➕ Increase fiber gradually instead of suddenly eating a lot at once.
Simple reminder:
Fiber + Fluids = a better combination for your bowel. 🌿
And remember, constipation isn’t always caused by diet. Certain medicines and health conditions can contribute too.
If your doctor has told you to restrict fluids because of a kidney, heart or other medical condition, follow your medical team’s advice instead.
