Did you know that some vaccines given during pregnancy can also help protect your newborn? 💉👶

💉 Tdap Vaccine

Tdap protects against:
✅ Tetanus
✅ Diphtheria
✅ Pertussis (whooping cough)

Malaysia's Ministry of Health recommends one dose of Tdap during every pregnancy, with the routine KKM programme giving it at 28–32 weeks.

💉 RSV Vaccine

Maternal RSV vaccination with Abrysvo may also be considered to help protect infants against RSV-related lower respiratory tract disease during their first months of life. Eligibility and timing should be discussed with your doctor.

🌸 PART 7/10 — MGTT: Why Do Pregnant Mothers Drink Glucose?

That sweet drink has a purpose! 🥤🤰

MGTT / OGTT (Oral Glucose Tolerance Test) helps detect gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) during pregnancy.

Why does it matter?

Gestational diabetes may cause no symptoms, which means you can feel completely well and still have high blood glucose.

Your doctor will assess whether and when MGTT is required based on your pregnancy, risk factors and local antenatal protocol.

If gestational diabetes is detected, early management with:

During the second trimester, ultrasound assessment can provide important information about:

💧 Amniotic fluid
👶 Number and position of babies

Depending on your pregnancy and individual risk factors, your doctor may recommend a more detailed or targeted ultrasound assessment.

🌸 PART 5/10 — What Should I Eat During Pregnancy?

Pregnancy does not mean you need to “eat for two”. 🥗🍳🥛

Instead, focus on quality nutrition.

🥬 Vegetables and fruits
🍗 Good sources of protein
🥚 Eggs and well-cooked meats
🥛 Calcium-rich foods
🌾 Whole grains and fibre
💧 Adequate water

Your doctor may also recommend supplements such as:
💊 Folic acid
💊 Iron
💊 Other vitamins or minerals when indicated

Folic acid is particularly important around conception and during early pregnancy. Iron requirements also increase during pregnancy.

⚠️ Avoid taking multiple supplements or herbal products without checking with your healthcare provider — “natural” does not automatically mean safe during pregnancy.

🌸 PART 4/10 — NIPT: What Parents Should Know

You may have heard about NIPT — Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing. 🧬👶

NIPT is a maternal blood test used to screen for certain chromosomal conditions in the baby.

Depending on the test selected, screening may include:
🔹 Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome)
🔹 Trisomy 18
🔹 Trisomy 13
🔹 S*x chromosome abnormalities
🔹 Additional chromosomal or genetic conditions with selected panels

Important: NIPT is a screening test, not a diagnostic test.

A high-risk result may require further counselling and diagnostic testing.

Not every mother needs the same type of prenatal screening. Speak to your doctor about your age, medical history, pregnancy and the advantages and limitations of each option.

When should you have your first ultrasound? 🍼

An early pregnancy ultrasound can help assess:

👶 Whether the pregnancy is located inside the uterus
💓 Pregnancy viability and fetal heartbeat when visible at the appropriate gestation
📅 Estimated gestational age and due date
👶 Whether there is one baby or more
🔎 Any concerns that may require closer assessment

A dating ultrasound is particularly useful when your menstrual cycle is irregular or you are unsure of your last menstrual period.

Remember: what can be seen on ultrasound depends on how many weeks pregnant you are. Sometimes a repeat scan is needed if it is still very early.
