Cancer Research Malaysia

Cancer Research Malaysia Dedicated to Saving Asian Lives through impactful research. Your donation saves lives Today, we are a 40-strong team of researchers.

Cancer Research Malaysia was incorporated as company limited by guarantee in June 2000 with the support and donation from these key individuals and organisations: Tan Sri Azizan and Tan Sri Hassan Merican (PETRONAS), Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay and Mrs Leong Lim Siew Lian (Genting) and Lembaga Totalisator Malaysia. The Cancer Research Malaysia laboratory was established in Sime Darby Medical Centre (then

known as Subang Jaya Medical Centre) in Jan 2001. With just a temporary laboratory of 700 sq ft and only 6 scientists, the first months were focused on establishing collaborations to begin Malaysian cancer research. In August 2002, Cancer Research Malaysia moved into a custom-made facility provided rent-free by Sime Darby Medical Centre and Cancer Research Malaysia was officially launched by the Malaysian Prime Minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in October 2002. At the core is a series of programmes based upon areas of strategic importance to Malaysian cancer research: focusing on cancers which are more common in Asians and understudied (such as oral and nasopharyngeal cancer), focusing on finding ways to reduce the burden of common cancers such as breast cancer, focusing on genetic and environmental risk factors in Asians, and focusing on Malaysia’s rich biodiversity in search for a cure for cancer.

We’re here. 🌊🤿

8 scientists. 7 research units. Some with family, some with friends. All together for One mission.

This Merdeka weekend, our Deep Dive into the Big C team has arrived in Tioman! We are ready to take the plunge and raise funds for cancer research in Malaysia. 🇲🇾

Some are experienced divers. Some are taking their very first dive. But all 8 are going deeper for the same reason: to help uncover better answers for cancer in Asians.

The dive starts soon. The mission starts now.

💉 A vaccine… for cancer? Apa tu?

Some help prevent infections that can lead to cancer. Others are being developed to help the immune system recognise and attack cancer cells.

We’re developing a vaccine that could help cancer patients fight cancer.

👉 Swipe to learn how cancer vaccines work and how you can help bring this research closer to patients. 💙

“Let’s go through this together.” Sometimes, support starts with one simple line.💗

This Merdeka season, we’re celebrating four women behind NORA who help make the breast cancer journey feel a little less lonely.

From Ipoh to Bintulu, Sandakan to Tawau, these navigators walk alongside patients through fear, questions, treatment decisions and the everyday worries that come after a diagnosis.

Hailing from different walks of life, their work reminds us that care isn’t just about reaching the hospital. It’s about making sure no woman feels alone once she gets there.

Swipe to learn more, and scan the QR code at the end to discover more of their stories!

Counting Down - Why would scientists choose to go diving for cancer research fundraising? 🤿

Because we believe in going where the answers are not yet known.
For many of us, diving into the deep sea is outside our comfort zone. But that is also what cancer research asks of us every day - to enter the unknown, face uncertainty, learn from failure, and keep searching for answers.

Under the surface of the ocean, there is still so much we don't understand. Cancer is much the same. We need to dive deeper to understand what causes cancer, why it behaves differently in Asians, and how we can find better ways to prevent and treat it.

On 30 August, we will take that message literally and dive into the waters of Pulau Tioman.

Our goal is RM30,000 for cancer research. We've raised RM6,000+ so far, but we still need your help to keep the research going.

You don't need to be a scientist. You don't need to be a diver. You just need to care. ❤️

RM10. RM50. RM100. Every contribution helps give research the “oxygen” it needs to go further.

Because somewhere beneath the surface, there may be an answer worth finding.

“DNA got recipe one ah?” 👀🧬

Your DNA is like your body’s instruction manual. But when that code changes, cells can grow out of control; and that’s how some cancers begin.

Tan Zi Ching from Cancer Research Malaysia’s Genomics and Bioinformatics Unit breaks down how studying DNA helps scientists find clues for cancer risk, prevention and treatment.

Strengthening International Collaboration in Breast Cancer Research

Yesterday, Cancer Research Malaysia (CRMY) was honoured to welcome Professor Laura Fejerman, Professor at the University of California Davis School of Medicine, USA. She is also Director of the Women’s Cancer Care and Research Program (WeCARE) at the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center and leading leads the Latin America Genetics and Genomics of Breast Cancer Consortium (LAGENO BC). Her research focuses on how genetics influence risk and outcome of breast cancer.

Together with CRMY and Sunway University, we are working on an National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded project to better understand HER2 positive breast cancer using data from Latin American and Asian populations, including CRMY’s Malaysian Breast Cancer Genetic Study (MyBrCa). This is vital because these communities are often underrepresented in global research, yet face unique risks.

Her scientific talk at CRMY, “Advancing Breast Cancer Risk Prediction and Prevention in Hispanic/Latina Women”, provided valuable insights for our researchers. Her week-long visit to Malaysia also enabled in-person discussions with Professor Ho Weang Kee and Dr Tai Mei Chee, allowing us to exchange ideas, explore future research opportunities, and strengthen our collaboration in breast cancer risk prediction and prevention.

We are grateful for her visit and excited to continue this collaboration; bringing together genetics, biology, and prevention science to create more precise and inclusive approaches to breast cancer research.
