Ice normally makes us think of freezing temperatures, but under extreme pressure, water can form exotic phases with properties that are completely different from ordinary ice.

One of these is superionic ice, where oxygen atoms form a solid-like structure while hydrogen ions move through it almost like a liquid. This unusual state can exist at temperatures reaching thousands of degrees Celsius.

Scientists study these extreme forms of water because they may exist deep inside planets such as Uranus and Neptune. Understanding them could help explain how these planets generate their unusual magnetic fields.

The temperature of your tea or coffee may matter more than whether you drink tea or coffee itself. Research has linked very hot beverages with a higher risk of esophageal cancer.

The concern is thought to come from repeated thermal injury to the lining of the esophagus. Large-scale research has found that people who prefer extremely hot drinks have substantially higher risks of certain types of esophageal cancer.

This does not mean tea or coffee itself is necessarily dangerous. The main concern appears to be the temperature. Allowing your drink to cool for a few minutes before drinking may reduce repeated heat exposure to the esophagus.

Researchers found signs consistent with the chewing of betel nuts in remains dating back roughly 16,000–25,000 years. Betel nut contains arecoline, a compound that can affect the nervous system and produce stimulating effects.

The discovery pushes evidence of human psychoactive substance use far further into prehistory. It also suggests that humans were experimenting with plants for their effects long before the development of many substances associated with later civilizations.

Solar panels normally depend on strong sunlight at the surface, but researchers in China have developed photovoltaic cells specifically designed to work underwater.

At around 10 meters below the South China Sea, much of the red and infrared light has already been absorbed by water. The remaining sunlight is dominated by blue-green wavelengths, so the researchers designed perovskite solar cells to make better use of this narrower spectrum.

The experimental system produced electricity underwater and could potentially help power marine sensors, underwater robots and other equipment that currently relies heavily on batteries. The technology still faces challenges such as seawater corrosion, marine growth and limited light at greater depths.

Scientists have genetically modified lettuce plants so that their leaves produce myoglobin, a protein naturally found in the muscles of animals such as cows and pigs.

Myoglobin helps store oxygen in muscle tissue and contributes to the colour and characteristic flavour associated with meat. By introducing animal genes into plant cells, researchers were able to make lettuce produce this animal protein.

The research does not mean that lettuce has been turned into meat. Instead, it demonstrates how plants could potentially be engineered to produce specific animal-derived proteins, opening possibilities for future food technology and alternative protein development.

A small study has found that smelling dark chocolate before and during resistance exercise may influence both appetite and exercise performance.

The study involved 23 moderately trained young men who had fasted overnight. Participants exposed to the smell of 90% dark chocolate performed about 18 more leg-extension repetitions compared with the control condition, while also reporting lower hunger and greater feelings of fullness.

The researchers suggest that food smells may trigger learned physiological and psychological responses associated with eating. However, the study was small and involved only young men, so more research is needed before concluding that smelling chocolate can reliably improve exercise performance.

Research involving men whose partners experienced recurrent miscarriages found that some men with apparently normal s***m parameters had significant DNA damage when examined using more detailed testing. Double-strand DNA breaks were particularly associated with recurrent pregnancy loss.

The findings highlight that male reproductive health involves more than s***m count and motility. However, s***m DNA testing is not a universal explanation for miscarriage, and recurrent pregnancy loss can have many different causes involving both partners.

The human liver has an unusual ability to repair itself after injury. Unlike many organs, the liver can restore lost tissue by stimulating surviving cells to grow and divide.

This regenerative ability is one reason the liver can recover after significant tissue loss. However, regeneration does not mean the liver is invincible. Repeated or chronic damage can interfere with its ability to repair itself and may eventually lead to permanent scarring.
