A workplace can look bright to your eyes and still not provide the appropriate level of illumination for the task you're doing.
According to the DOSH 2018 Lighting Guidelines, different workplace activities require different lighting levels.
For example:
๐ Filing & copying: 300 lux
๐ป Office work & data entry: 500 lux
๐ฌ Precision industrial electronics: up to 1,500 lux
Why does this matter?
When lighting is inadequate, your eyes may have to work harder to see fine details. Over time, this can contribute to visual discomfort, fatigue and difficulty concentrating.
But there's another side to the story:

Poorly positioned or excessive lighting can create glare and reflections, which can also make visual tasks uncomfortable.
The goal isn't simply to make your workplace brighter.

For employers, workplace lighting should be considered as part of a broader visual and ergonomic environment.
For employees, if you regularly experience eye fatigue, headaches or difficulty seeing your screen clearly, don't simply turn up the brightness.
