Colorectal cancer is not only a disease of older adults. While the majority of patients are still over 60, colorectal cancer is increasingly being seen among people in their 20s, 30s and 40s.

In a recent interview with Astro AWANI, our Consultant General & Colorectal Surgeon, Dato’ Dr Luqman Mazlan, discussed this concerning trend and highlighted how modern lifestyles, including unhealthy diets, physical inactivity and stress, may contribute to the growing number of cases among younger adults.

Dato’ Dr Luqman also shared how advancements in robotic surgery are changing the way colorectal cancer can be treated. With enhanced visualisation and greater surgical precision, robotic technology can help surgeons identify important structures such as nerves and blood vessels more clearly, while potentially supporting a shorter hospital stay and faster recovery.

I am thrilled to note the renewal of the Memorandum of Understanding between MSCRS and Medtronic for the next two years. When I endorsed the initial MoU last year, I was confident it would be advantageous, and I am gratified that our members, fellows, trainees, and ultimately, patients have benefited from all the workshops and initiatives we have undertaken through this partnership. It's also the inaugural occasion we hosted an event at our very own MSCRS office. A venue to finally claim as our own after 21 years of establishment.

It was a pleasure to be part of the Advancing Surgical Excellence Webinar Series, presenting on “Closing the Gap: Technology, Technique, and the Fight Against Anastomotic Leak.”

The webinar brought together 146 surgeons from 12 countries across Asia Pacific. It was particularly encouraging to learn that 93% of participants intend to apply the knowledge gained to their practice, with many highlighting the importance of optimising stapling decisions based on tissue conditions.

Thank you to Johnson & Johnson MedTech for the invitation and to all the participants for an engaging discussion. It’s always rewarding to contribute to conversations that ultimately aim to improve patient outcomes.

It’s a wrap.

I had the privilege of spending two productive days in Jakarta, where I delivered two public talks and participated in a live radio interview. It was also my first opportunity to experience the heart of Indonesia’s vibrant capital.

I was truly impressed by the warm hospitality, the engaging audiences, and the opportunity to interact with so many people committed to improving public awareness of colorectal health. And, of course, Jakarta did not disappoint with its wonderful food!

Honoured to be part of the GEMILANG Fellowship programme, which brings together emerging corporate leaders to learn from experienced mentors and industry leaders.

Today, I had the privilege of sharing the stage with Datuk Dr Rosli , Medical Director of CVSKL, in a panel discussion moderated by Azran Osman-Rani, CEO of Naluri. Our conversation centred on leadership in healthcare, the realities of clinical practice partnerships, and the challenges and opportunities of being an equity partner in a new hospital.

It was a candid and engaging discussion on balancing clinical excellence, business sustainability, governance, and the evolving landscape of corporate healthcare in Malaysia.

A particular highlight was the opportunity to exchange thoughts and perspectives with Tan Sri Wahid Omar and the fellowship participants. The quality of the questions and discussions reflected the curiosity, ambition, and leadership potential of the next generation of Malaysian leaders.
