𝗕𝗜𝗢𝗙𝗜𝗟𝗠𝗦: 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗛𝗜𝗗𝗗𝗘𝗡 𝗦𝗛𝗜𝗘𝗟𝗗 𝗢𝗙 𝗕𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗜𝗔

Biofilms are communities of microbes that stick to surfaces and form a slimy protective layer. They can develop on medical devices, human body, water pipes, and even hospital surfaces.

These protective layers make microbes harder to remove or kill, helping them survive cleaning and antibiotics and enabling the spread of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria, including MDROs.

In this week’s series of 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐅𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬, we explore biofilms and their link to antimicrobial resistance.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR), often called “superbugs”, is one of today’s most pressing global health threats.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), AMR contributed to 4.95 million deaths globally in 2019. Misuse of antibiotics and gaps in infection prevention make infections harder and more costly to treat, increasing hospital stays and spreading more easily in communities and healthcare settings.

Experts warn that without effective interventions, AMR-related deaths could rise dramatically in the coming decades.
