In our latest session, we crafted an activity where children dig out hidden crystals from playdough, a playful challenge where our students are secretly mastering critical developmental milestones.

This simple yet powerful task provides the essential building blocks for independent writing and daily tasks, while simultaneously training the brain and eyes to work together to enhance classroom attention.

It looks like a simple craft, but it’s actually a total workout for tiny hands!

Watch how beautifully he works through this Occupational Therapy exercise! By twisting, wrapping, and pulling pipe cleaners around a simple stick, he is building the exact foundational skills needed for everyday independence.

Every twist and turn helps develop:
Pencil Grip Strength as it prepares small fingers for school and writing.
Self-Dressing Skills that strengthens the coordination needed for buttons and zippers.
Bilateral Coordination is using both hands to work together as a team!

Is your child constantly hand flapping or rocking when they get overwhelmed or excited?

One of the most common questions I get from parents is: “How do I stop my child from flapping their hands?”

First, a quick reframe: We don’t want to just "stop" it. Hand flapping or self-stimulatory motor stereotypy is often how a child’s nervous system tries to regulate itself. They are seeking physical feedback (proprioceptive input) to calm their bodies down.

Instead of stopping them, we want to redirect that sensory-seeking energy into something functional!

1️⃣ We introduce a weighted wristband. The added deep pressure gives their muscles and joints the heavy work and grounding feedback they are craving, which naturally dampens the urge to flap.
2️⃣ Immediately after putting it on, we channel that physical energy into a functional task like picking up toys and putting them in a basket.

The Result? A regulated nervous system, improved fine motor practice, and a tidy room!

🔹 The Power of the Anticipatory Pause when our therapist hides the object and uses a rhythmic countdown ("3, 2, 1...")? creating a brief, thrilling time-delay, triggering a natural "communication window." Her brain isn't just waiting; it is actively anticipating, organizing, and preparing the exact word to say.
