How do we help children learn about their country? 🇲🇾

We start with exposure.

We can show them pictures of Malaysia food, talk about different cultures, name historical objects, or read about Malaysia from books. But whenever possible, we also want our children to go, see, walk through, and experience.

Our SPG & EIP students recently visited the State Museum together.

What did they learn from the trip?

Perhaps the memories formed were different for every child.

One child might remember the excitement of travelling somewhere together with friends.

Another might notice how the lighting changed as they walked from one gallery to another.

Someone might be fascinated by the different buildings and structures they saw.

Another might remember stepping into a traditional longhouse, the wooden floor beneath their feet, the long shared space, the rooms, and how different it felt from the houses they usually see.

They may not remember every fact we tell them.

And that is okay.

Exposure matters.

Before children can understand bigger concepts such as our country, history, culture, community, and heritage, they need experiences that give meaning to these words.

They need opportunities to see different places.
To move through different spaces.
To notice.
To wonder.
To experience something beyond their usual routines.

Exposure builds experiences.
Experiences build understanding.
And understanding takes time to grow.

Growing a tree takes ten years; nurturing a person takes a hundred.

We may not always see immediately what a child has taken away from an outing like this. But every new place visited, every new sight noticed, and every shared experience becomes another little piece of their understanding of the world.

And so, we keep planting the seeds.

Developmental Language Disorder]

At the organic farm, our children dug the soil, planted seeds, harvested fresh vegetables, explored nature, and discovered where food really comes from. Every experience engaged their senses and turned learning into something they could see, touch, smell, hear, and do.

🌱 Every harvest nurtured patience.
🌱 Every shared task strengthened communication and teamwork.
🌱 Every new discovery sparked curiosity and observation.
🌱 Every hands-on experience built appreciation for nature and the food on our tables.

Community outings like these provide opportunities to develop language, social interaction, problem-solving, motor skills, and independence in authentic, everyday contexts. The best learning happens when children are actively involved, making connections between what they learn and the world around them.

Our underlying assumptions about our students' abilities influence how much we believe they are capable of learning. With the right support and repeated learning opportunities, they can learn to adapt to the library environment and explore a wider variety of books.

PPAS Bangi offers free public access, and membership registration is quick and straightforward. Each IC holder may borrow up to eight books per month. The librarians are friendly, understanding, and easy to communicate with.
