"There is no child who cannot learn. There is only a child waiting for someone to understand them.
One of the most meaningful sessions in our course, we explored Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutation), not simply as a sequence of yoga postures, but as a powerful practice that can nurture the physical, emotional, and neurological development of children with neurodiversity.
As teachers, our responsibility is not to make every child fit the practice. Our responsibility is to
During the session, we discussed how each movement can be modified according to the child's abilities, sensory needs, muscle strength, coordination, attention span, and emotional readiness. Every child has a different starting point, and every small step deserves to be celebrated.
I shared the journey of one of my students who touched my heart deeply.
When she first came to class, she couldn't even complete the first two steps of Sun Salutation. She would become overwhelmed and cry. Even simple movements like sitting down and standing up were challenging for her.
Instead of expecting her to perform the full sequence, we slowed down.
We focused on standing movements. We practised sitting and getting up. We built strength, balance, confidence, and trustโone movement at a time.
Today...
She surprised all of us.
She completed two full rounds of Sun Salutation with confidence. She also held hold asna for much longer than she ever had before.
That moment reminded me that progress is never about speed. It is about patience, consistency, understanding, and love.
When we stop asking, "Why can't this child do it?" and start asking, "How can I help this child succeed?", everything changes.
๐ Why is Sun Salutation beneficial for neurodiverse children?
๐ฟ Improves gross motor coordination and body awareness
๐ฟ Enhances balance, strength, and flexibility
๐ฟ Develops motor planning and bilateral coordination
๐ฟ Supports sensory integration and proprioception
๐ฟ Encourages breath awareness and nervous system regulation
๐ฟ Improves attention, focus, and emotional regulation
๐ฟ Builds confidence, independence, and self-esteem through repeated success
The Hatha Yoga Pradipika beautifully reminds us that yoga belongs to everyone:
"Whether young, old, very old, sick, or weak, anyone who practises yoga according to their capacity can attain success."
This ancient wisdom reflects what we witness in every class. Yoga is not reserved for the flexible or the strong. It is a path for every child, regardless of their abilities.
As yoga teachers, we don't just teach postures.
We build confidence.
We celebrate small victories.
We create safe spaces.
We believe in every childโeven before they believe in themselves.
Because when a child is understood, supported, and loved, they don't just learn yoga...
They discover their own limitless potential ๐๐
