When I was young during the Dragon Boat Festival, I recall the gentle sounds of running water from the kitchen, as bamboo leaves were washed, one by one, and stacked with care. The elders with their heads bowed, silently wrapping glutinous rice and fillings,
then tying them tightly, round and round with fine string.
I did not understand back then, why none of those steps could be skipped.
It was only later, as an adult I came to realise those seemingly repetitive actions actually aided us in remembering specific people who are no longer present, while also helping us find a safe place to gently settle feelings of longing for them that we couldn’t put into words.
Time passes by quickly, and some are no longer by our side.
However, during every Dragon Boat Festival – when the familiar fragrance rises again, we still, in the same quiet way, gently remember them.
It dawns on us that the purpose of these rituals has never been mere formality, but rather to ensure that those important emotions have a place to return to through the passage of time.
Wishing you a peaceful Dragon Boat Festival 🌿
May every thought of longing find its home.
