The cup has been sitting there all day… but the water is still untouched!
It may not mean that they are refusing to drink.
As we getting older, the feeling of thirst can become weaker.
Sometimes, an older adult may also:
• Forget to drink
• Be unable to reach the cup
• Find the cup difficult to hold
• Feel uncomfortable when swallowing
• Avoid drinking because they worry about frequent trips to the toilet
Simply leaving water nearby may not be enough.
Here are a few simple ways to help:
• Offer small amounts throughout the day
• Place the cup where it is easy to see and reach
• Use a lightweight cup that is easier to hold
• Try drinks at a temperature they prefer
• Gently keep track of how much they have had
For most older adults, 6–8 cups of fluid a day can be used as a general guide.
However, individual needs may different.
Please take EXTRA CARE if they:
• Cough or choke while drinking
• Develop a wet or gurgly voice after drinking
• Have heart failure or advanced kidney disease
• Are undergoing dialysis
• Have been advised to limit fluids
In these situations, please follow the advice of doctor or healthcare team.
