*HISTORIC VISIT OF THE FEDERAL PERMANENT SECRETARY, FMOH, TO NOFIC ABAKALIKI*

On Tuesday, 24th February 2026, the National Obstetric Fistula Centre (NOFIC), Abakaliki, had the distinguished honour of receiving the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (FMOH), Daju Kachollom, mni, and her esteemed team on a working visit to the Centre.

The atmosphere at NOFIC Abakaliki was vibrant and welcoming, as the NOFIC Choir delivered melodious renditions, complemented by colourful cultural performances by NOFIC children, reflecting the warmth, unity, and spirit of the Centre.

A major highlight of the visit was the official commissioning of the newly completed Maternity/ICU (AIC) Complex Building and the Phase II Oxygen Plant; critical healthcare infrastructure projects fully executed under the purposeful and visionary leadership of the Medical Director, Johnson Akuma Obuna.

The Medical Director was accompanied by members of the hospital management team, including the Head of Clinical Services, Dr. Emmanuel Yakubu; the Head of Training, Research and Mobilization, Prof. Uro-Chukwu Henry; the Head of Administration, Mr. Oko Anthony; the Head of Finance and Accounts, Mrs. Emilia Ray-Akawan; and the Head of Procurement, Mr. Christian Otuoye.

Also in the distinguished entourage were the Chief Medical Directors of Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital Abakaliki and David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital, Professors Onoh Robinson and MaryRose Agwu respectively; the Ebonyi State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Moses Ekuma; and the Ebonyi State Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Lawrence Ezeogo.

These landmark projects significantly strengthen emergency obstetric care, intensive care services, and ensure uninterrupted oxygen supply, thereby enhancing quality healthcare delivery at NOFIC and beyond.

Following the commissioning ceremony, the Permanent Secretary embarked on a guided facility tour, inspecting key service areas and interacting warmly with staff.

The visit also featured a strategic engagement session with NOFIC Management, fostering dialogue on service improvement, institutional growth, and alignment with national health priorities.

In continuation of her engagements in the State, the following day, the Federal Permanent Secretary flagged off the South East Cancer Awareness Campaign at Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital Abakaliki. Subsequently, she was hosted to a state dinner at the Ebonyi State Government House by the Executive Governor of Ebonyi State, His Excellency, Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru.

The event concluded with closing formalities, a group photograph session, and the departure of the Permanent Secretary and her team.
This historic visit underscores the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare’s continued commitment to strengthening tertiary healthcare institutions and reaffirms NOFIC Abakaliki’s unwavering dedication to excellence in maternal and reproductive healthcare services.

The National Obstetric Fistula Centre Abakaliki successfully held an orientation programme for its newly recruited Staff and Locum Officers on 20th February, 2026, marking the beginning of another chapter of service, professionalism, and commitment to quality healthcare delivery.

The programme commenced with a powerful and inspiring address by the Medical Director; Prof Johnson Akuma Obuna, who warmly welcomed the new team members and emphasized the Centre’s unwavering dedication to excellence, compassion, integrity, and patient-centered care.

We were privileged to host distinguished resource persons who enriched the session with insightful presentations:

• Mr. Godwin Chukwu Mbe, State Coordinator, National Health Insurance Authority; Ebonyi State Chapter, who enlightened participants on health insurance policies, operational guidelines, and the critical role of compliance in improving healthcare accessibility.

• Prof. Wilberforce Oti, who delivered an engaging lecture on work ethics, professionalism, discipline, and the standards expected within a federal health institution.

• Mr. Dennis Oriaifo, Director, Code of Conduct Bureau Ebonyi State, who educated staff on ethical responsibility, public service rules, and the importance of accountability in government establishments.

Internal facilitators also played a vital role in the training: • Dr. Nelson Egwu, the SERVICOM NODAL Officer, delivered an insightful presentation emphasizing the Centre’s commitment to promoting quality, prompt, and transparent service delivery at the National Obstetric Fistula Centre Abakaliki.

He further highlighted that SERVICOM is not just a unit, but a culture of accountability and patient-centered care. He reminded newly recruited staff and locum officers that every patient interaction reflects the integrity and reputation of the institution.

The Head of Administration, who guided participants on administrative structure, procedures, and institutional expectations.
The orientation served as a foundation for alignment with the Centre’s vision and mission, reinforcing our collective responsibility to deliver quality obstetric fistula care and uphold the highest standards of public service.

The Medical Director of the National Obstetric Fistula Centre (NOFIC) Abakaliki, paid a courtesy visit to Their Excellencies, Chief Martin Elechi and Mrs. Josephine Elechi*

In line with the hospital’s annual tradition, the Medical Director of the National Obstetric Fistula Centre (NOFIC), Abakaliki, Prof. Johnson Akuma Obuna, and his Management Team shortly after a New Year Homage to Their Excellencies, Rt. Hon. Builder Francis Nwifuru and wife, also paid a similar courtesy visit to Their Excellencies, Chief Martin Elechi and his beloved wife, Chief Mrs. Josephine Elechi. Recall that Chief Mrs. Josephine Elechi was founder of the Mother and Child Care Initiative (MCCI) which later metamorphosed into NOFIC Abakaliki.

The visit gave the Medical Director opportunity to brief Their Excellencies on the remarkable achievements recorded by the Centre over the past years. These include the Centre being recognised as a degree awarding institution in collaboration with Ebonyi State University Abakaliki, for Obstetrics Fistula, Oncology Nursing, Surgical Oncology, Reproductive Health, Invitro Fertilization and Embryo Transfer and Renal Medicine in addition to other numerous infrastructural projects already at advanced level.

In their responses, His Excellency Chief Martins Elechi and the wife, Chief Mrs. Josephine Elechi, warmly appreciated the delegation and expressed delight at the steady growth and impact of the Centre. As a symbol of goodwill and hospitality, kola nuts were presented to the visiting team.

Members of the delegation who accompanied the Medical Director, Prof Johnson A. Obuna, included Prof. Uro-Chukwu Henry; the Director/Head of Training, Research and Mobilization. The Head of Administration, Mr. Oko Anthony, the representative of the Head of Clinical Service, Dr Osuagwu Chidubem Philip , the Head of Nursing Services, Mrs. Patricia Ani, the Head of Accounts, Mrs. Emilia Ray-Akanwa, the Head of Procurement, Mr. Christian Otuoye and the PRO, Mrs. Rita-Stella Nwojiji.

The visit reaffirmed the strong bond between NOFIC Abakaliki and its founding vision of restoring dignity, health, and hope to women and mothers.
