Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is one of the most common inherited blood disorders in the world.
It was first medically described in 1910 and continues to affect millions of people globally, especially in Africa. Nigeria carries one of the highest burdens of sickle cell disease worldwide.
Studies show that about 20%–30% of Nigerians carry the sickle cell trait (HbAS), while thousands of babies are born each year with sickle cell disease.
What is Sickle Cell Disease?
Sickle cell disease is a genetic blood disorder that causes red blood cells to become hard, sticky, and shaped like a crescent (sickle). These abnormal cells can block blood flow, leading to:
✔ Severe pain crises
✔ Chronic fatigue and anemia
✔ Frequent infections
✔ Delayed growth in children
✔ Organ damage and other complications
What Can You Do?
• Know your genotype early
• Get premarital genotype screening
• Seek genetic counseling before marriage
• Eat a balanced, nutrient-rich diet
• Stay hydrated and maintain regular medical checkups
• Make informed family planning decisions
