All You Need to Know About Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)

If you ignore that burning feeling when you p*e, the infection could travel to your kidneys… and in severe cases, it can even lead to permanent damage.

Scary, right?

The truth is, what starts as a tiny irritation can turn into a serious health problem if left untreated.

What's the Urinary Tract?

Don’t let the word “urinary” intimidate you—it’s just the system your body uses to make and remove urine.

Think of it like a home plumbing system:

Kidneys → The water machine that produces urine

Ureters → The pipes that carry urine to storage

Bladder → The container that stores urine

Urethra → The tap where urine comes out

In women, the urethra (tap) is just below the cl****is.
In men, it’s the same opening where s***m comes out.

What Is a UTI?

A urinary tract infection (UTI) happens when bacteria sneak into this system, usually starting in the urethra and bladder.
If untreated, the infection can climb up to your kidneys, which is when it becomes dangerous.

Common Causes of UTIs

UTIs are mostly caused by E. coli bacteria (from the intestine).
You are at higher risk if you:

• Hold urine for too long (like on long trips or at work)
• Don’t drink enough water
• Use the toilet without proper hygiene
• Have unprotected s*x and don’t urinate after
• Are pregnant (hormonal changes affect urine flow)
• Use urinary catheters
• Have a weak immune system

Symptoms You Should Never Ignore

—Burning or stinging when urinating
—Feeling like you need to p*e all the time but only passing drops
—Cloudy or foul‑smelling urine
—Pain in your lower stomach or back
—Blood in your urine (even light pink counts!)
—Fever or chills (a sign it’s moving to your kidneys)

How to Prevent UTIs

—Drink water—think of it as rinsing your pipes.
—Don’t hold urine for long periods.
—Wipe front to back (for women).
—Pee after s*x—flush out any bacteria.
—Skip harsh soaps or perfumes down there.

Pharmacists slam NMA’s ‘hostility' over health sector reforms.
August 7, 2025

The Nigeria chapter of the West Africa Postgraduate College of Pharmacists (WAPCP ) has condemned recent statements by the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), describing them as regressive, hostile and a direct affront to professional growth and patient safety in the country’s health sector.

This was contained in a rejoinder issued via a statement signed by the chairman of the chapter, Dr Margaret Obono, following a communique from the Lagos State chapter of the NMA and the 2025 Annual Delegates Meeting (ADM) in Katsina, which opposed the implementation of the Consultant Pharmacist cadre.

According to Dr Obono, the NMA’s reaction, published in a national daily on May 8, 2025, was not only combative in tone but also laced with misinformation and fallacious arguments.

“We initially thought the letter was a social media hoax. Its language was uncharacteristically aggressive, filled with misconceptions and ‘street language’ unbecoming of a professional body like the NMA,” she said.

The pharmacists’ body raised the alarm at the NMA’s open disapproval of a policy approved by the National Council on Establishment (NCE), a statutory body responsible for professional reforms in Nigeria’s public service.

“The NMA’s claim that the consultant cadre for pharmacists is illegal is an affront to the Federal Government itself,” Dr Obono noted, questioning the NMA’s authority to challenge government policy implementation at institutions such as the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Ebute Metta and FNPH, Yaba.

Citing examples of the NMA’s combative posture, Dr Obono pointed to threats made against Medical Directors implementing the cadre and the association’s claim that consultant pharmacists offer “no clinical value.”

FDCs are very popular in the pharmaceutical market but attention should be given to irrational combinations.

Combination products are acceptable when the combination has a proven advantage over single compounds administered separately in therapeutic effect, safety or compliance.

The most pressing concern with irrational FDCs is that they expose patients to unnecessary risk of adverse drug reactions-

For instance, paediatric formulations of nimesulide + paracetamol.

Nimesulide alone is more antipyretic than paracetamol, more anti-inflammatory than aspirin, and equivalent in analgesia to any of the NSAIDS alone,so efficacy gains are unlikely with added paracetamol. However, the patients may be subject to increased hepatotoxic effects from the combination.

Pharmaceutical manufacturers, however, continue to reap the benefits of huge sales, and therefore continue to promote combinations with vigour.

Drug regulatory bodies should have more control to prevent unnecessary FDCs.

It is a health condition where tissue similar to the lining inside your uterus, called the endometrium, starts to grow outside the uterus

This can happen on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or other parts of the pelvic area.

It’s important to know that this tissue behaves like it would inside the uterus, it thickens, breaks down, and bleeds with each menstrual cycle.

groundbreaking study has just revealed a surprising connection between oral health and mental health. Researchers analysing data from over 15,000 adults across the United States found that people with lower diversity of bacteria in their mouths were more likely to experience symptoms of depression.

We often hear about the gut-brain connection, but this research shines a spotlight on the oral microbiome, the second-largest collection of microbes in the human body. These microbes help regulate inflammation and play a major role in supporting the immune system, both of which are closely tied to mood and brain function.

Scientists measured the alpha diversity of mouth bacteria, which refers to the number of different bacterial species present. Those with higher bacterial variety generally reported better mental well-being, including fewer signs of sadness, fatigue, and low motivation. Interestingly, the benefits of diversity seem to level off beyond a certain point, suggesting that balance, not excess, is key.

The findings were especially notable in men and non-Hispanic White individuals, where the link between oral microbiome and depression appeared strongest. While it’s still unclear whether depression changes the mouth or vice versa, the connection is now undeniable.

This opens the door to exciting new mental health strategies focused on oral hygiene and probiotics as potential tools to boost mood and brain health.

🧬 Major study shows a virus may be causing schizophrenia and bipolar disorder
New research is shedding light on a surprising potential contributor to severe mental illnesses like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder: a common virus.
Scientists at Johns Hopkins discovered that traces of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) were found in the choroid plexus—a part of the brain that produces cerebrospinal fluid—in people diagnosed with these disorders.
Their analysis of postmortem brain samples uncovered 13 different viruses in this tissue, but only HCV was significantly associated with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Supporting this, a massive review of health records from 285 million people revealed HCV was present in 3.5% of schizophrenia cases and 3.9% of bipolar cases—markedly higher than the 0.5% seen in the general population.
While the virus wasn’t found inside brain tissue itself, researchers believe it might affect brain function indirectly by altering gene activity in areas critical for mood and memory, such as the hippocampus. The findings don't suggest that HCV causes schizophrenia, but they raise the possibility that, for some patients, a viral infection could contribute to symptoms or severity. This opens the door to studying antiviral therapies as potential treatments. Experts emphasize that mental illnesses are complex and typically arise from multiple interacting factors—including genetics, chemical imbalances, early developmental issues, and environmental stressors. Still, the viral connection offers a new and intriguing piece of the mental health puzzle.
