“What if I say the wrong thing?”

This is one of the most common fears people have when someone opens up to them, especially in sensitive moments.

And the truth is, saying the wrong thing can sometimes do more harm than good, even when you mean well.

That’s exactly why we created the Lay Counselling Training.

To help you know what to say, how to respond, and how to support people safely when it really matters.

Many boys grow up hearing that emotions should be hidden, vulnerability is weakness, and silence is strength.

But boys deserve emotional safety too.

They deserve spaces where they can speak honestly, ask for help, cry without shame, and be supported without judgment.

The way we raise boys shapes how they see themselves, how they build relationships, and how they navigate life as men.

This International Day of the Boy Child, we are reminding boys everywhere that their feelings matter too.

This International Day of Families, the theme “Families, Inequalities and Child Wellbeing” reminds us that not all families have the same opportunities in life💛

In many African communities, some children have access to good schools, healthcare, and support, while others are facing poverty and limited resources. These differences shape how children grow, learn, and see themselves.

When families struggle, children feel it too, often through stress, low confidence, and emotional challenges.

That is why families, communities, and governments all have a role to play in supporting children better. When families are supported, children do better.

Every child deserves care, safety, and a fair chance in life, no matter where they are born.

At The Journey Beyond the Title, hosted by the Nile Psychology Department, we had the opportunity to engage with undergraduate students in a powerful conversation about what lies beyond the classroom and what it truly means to grow into impactful psychologists, therapists, and counselors.

We moved beyond theory into reality, discussing the demands of the field, the emotional and ethical responsibilities, and the practical steps students can begin taking now to prepare for meaningful careers in mental health.

The session opened space for honest questions, reflection, and clarity on the skills, exposure, and mindset needed to thrive in this journey.

We remain committed to supporting the next generation of mental health professionals by creating platforms that equip, inspire, and strengthen young people for purpose-driven practice.

We are also open to partnerships with institutions and organizations interested in student engagement, mental health education, and capacity-building programs.

When a teenager starts pulling away, it does not always mean they do not need support. Sometimes, it means they do not know how to ask for help.

Teenagers today are dealing with pressure, anxiety, emotional struggles, peer influence, identity questions, and silent battles that many adults may not immediately recognize.

The 5-Day Lay Counselling Training is designed for parents, teachers, caregivers, and anyone who works closely with teenagers.

This training will help you build practical skills to communicate better, listen with empathy, reduce conflict, notice signs of emotional distress, and support teenagers with more confidence, care, and structure.

You will also learn basic screening support for depression, anxiety, stress, and emotional distress, psychological first aid skills, safe helping skills, support group facilitation, and when to refer for professional help.

Nigeria’s mental health gap is not just clinical, it is also informational, cultural, and structural. And one of the most critical entry points for change is the NYSC ecosystem.

Last week, through our Mental Health Promotion Program for NYSC Corp Members, we implemented targeted mental health sensitization sessions across NYSC camps in Abuja and Nasarawa State, reaching corps members at scale during one of their most transitional life phases.

These sessions focused on:
- Mental health literacy and early identification of distress
- Reducing stigma in peer and community settings
- Introducing accessible support pathways, including lay counselling models
- Demonstrating the MindWelNest App as a digital entry point to mental wellbeing support

Beyond attendance, the key outcome was engagement, corps members actively participating in discussions, sharing lived experiences, and requesting structured support systems they can take into their communities.

This work reinforces a simple truth: when mental health education is embedded within existing national structures like NYSC, it becomes scalable, sustainable, and community-owned.

We are continuing to build this ecosystem through training, data-informed programming, and digital tools like mindwellnest app designed to bridge the gap between awareness and access.

This is not just outreach. It is infrastructure for mental wellbeing in young Nigeria 💛

And yes there’s an app for your “I’m stressed but I don’t know who to talk to” moments

Check out the mindwellnest app and join a growing community making mental wellbeing easier to access, one click at a time🥰

Working with vulnerable communities means your team hears more than just project feedback.

They hear real life, stress, loss, pressure, survival.

And how they respond in those moments directly affects trust, outcomes, and the impact of your work.

Equip your team with the skills to handle these conversations well, so your programs don’t just reach people, they truly support them.

That’s stronger impact. Better trust. Better ROI.
