CAN A POORLY VENTILATED TOILET AFFECT YOUR HEALTH?

Imagine this scenario:

A family uses a toilet inside the house. The toilet window is always closed, the door is kept shut, and there is little or no ventilation.

Over time, the toilet and bathroom becomes damp, smells linger, and moisture remains trapped inside.

This can create an environment where mould and other microorganisms can thrive, especially when the area is not properly cleaned and dried.

Poor ventilation can also allow unpleasant and potentially irritating gases and airborne contaminants to accumulate.

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦ And yes, both adults AND children can be affected.

Children may be particularly sensitive to damp and mouldy environments, while adults can also experience problems such as:

β€’ Coughing or throat irritation
β€’ Sneezing and nasal irritation
β€’ Worsening of allergies or asthma
β€’ Eye irritation
β€’ Unpleasant odours and poor indoor air quality

Simply closing your toilet window or door does not automatically cause an infection. The health concern is mainly related to poor ventilation, dampness, hygiene, and the buildup or growth of microorganisms and other irritants.

What can you do?

Keep the toilet/bathroom adequately ventilated. If there is no window or natural airflow, consider an appropriate exhaust fan or other safe ventilation method.

Keep surfaces clean and dry, and address persistent dampness, leaks, or mould.

A healthy home is not just about keeping the toilet clean, proper ventilation matters too.

Share this post. Someone with a poorly ventilated toilet and bathroom may need to see it. ❀️

⚑ THIS IS NOT JUST ORDINARY SORE THROAT; PLEASE, PARENTS, READ THIS

One of my elder brother (Engineer) sent me this message today, and honestly, I paused.

He told me about a family situation involving suspected diphtheria.

According to the account he shared with me, his wife’s elder sister reportedly lost her 8-year-old son early this morning.

When the family went there, they reportedly met another child who was seriously ill and had to be rushed to Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Ikeja, Lagos State.

According to what the family was told at the hospital, the illness was suspected to be DIPHTHERIA.

I am sharing this not to create panic, but because as a Medical Content Creator, Public Health Advocate, Director of Public Health Response and Medical Advisor-Coordinator, I believe that when a real life experience raises a public health concern, we should use it to educate people.

Because sometimes, the symptoms can begin looking deceptively ordinary.

A child may start with:

1. Sore throat
2. Fever
3. Weakness
4. Difficulty swallowing
5. Swollen glands around the neck et al.

Then things can become much more serious.

DIPHTHERIA is caused by toxin-producing strains of Corynebacterium diphtheriae. The toxin can damage tissues and, in respiratory disease, a thick greyish/white membrane can develop in the throat and potentially obstruct the airway. The toxin do also affect organs such as the heart and nerves.

And this is where I want every parent and caregiver to pay attention:

DO NOT WAIT UNTIL A CHILD IS STRUGGLING TO BREATHE BEFORE SEEKING MEDICAL CARE.

If a child has a persistent sore throat, fever, difficulty swallowing, unusual swelling of the neck, breathing difficulty, or a grey/white membrane in the throat, seek urgent medical attention.

Diphtheria can be treated, and early treatment matters.

Treatment do include diphtheria antitoxin and appropriate antibiotics, while close contacts may also require assessment, preventive antibiotics and vaccination depending on their immunisation status.

AND PLEASE, I AM USING THIS LIFE SCENARIO TO BEG YOU FOR THE SAKE OF BEEN BECOME, HAD I KNOW AND FOR THE SAKE OF YOUR CHILDREN. DON'T FORGET VACCINATION!

You are exposed to the society life and you know how things use to be when it comes to health matters in some part of the world.

Even a month old baby is a big life unforgettable traumatic situation for parent, talkless of 8 years old Child.

Diphtheria has a vaccine called DPT vaccine for preventability.

World Health Organisation (WHO) has concluded to recommends a complete three doses of primary series for diphtheria which make it a containable vaccine beginner in infancy, followed by booster doses during childhood and adolescence.

People who are incompletely vaccinated should be assessed and brought up to date according to the applicable immunisation schedule.

So please, check your child and children immunisation record.

Don't assume:

My children/child looks healthy, so there is no problem with them.

Don't assume:

It is just tonsillitis (sore throat inflammation)

And please don't spend several days treating a potentially serious illness at home without proper medical assessment.

Like I always said, not everyone on Scrub or Overall Long white cloth is a Qualified person and Professional.

This my elder brother's wife family’s painful experience should become your family's opportunity to learn.

I am therefore lending my voice to this awareness:

Parents, caregivers, teachers and community members, let us take diphtheria seriously.

If you suspect it, seek medical attention immediately and inform the healthcare team close to your domain about the symptoms and any possible exposure.

And to my Elder brother wife's family going through this painful experience, may God comfort you all and give you strength with fortitude to bear this 8 year's old son lost to the untimely death. πŸ•ŠοΈ

With my grassroots engagement so far, I have learn a lot on delivering humanitarian service especially on the Physically engaged Medical Outreach field we did which we are hoping for sponsorship that, Public health is not only about treating diseases after they appear.

Sometimes, it is about recognising the danger early enough to prevent another family from experiencing the same pain.

I hope this help some family?

Kindly note that, it is a free treatment at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, to everyone in Lagos and it's Environment. If I have more information of other Hospitals on this, I will surely notify.

Please share this because it is important on saving a single family on this situation than None.

DEAR DOCTORS, CAN WE DO BETTER?

Imagine a pregnant woman walks into a hospital with severely elevated blood pressure.

The doctor writes a prescription, the pharmacist looks at it and suddenly says:

Doctor... please, can we have a small meeting before this prescription leaves this hospital? πŸ˜‚πŸ˜

Why?

Because some antihypertensive medicines that are useful in non-pregnant patients, including ACE inhibitors such as lisinopril, enalapril, ramipril and captopril, are generally contraindicated during pregnancy because of their potential to cause serious fetal harm, particularly later in pregnancy.

This is not the kind of prescription where we say, Let’s try it first and correct it later. When pregnancy is involved, medication selection requires extra caution.

And this is exactly why every hospital needs competent healthcare professionals working as a team. Doctors diagnose and prescribe, pharmacists review medicines, nurses monitor patients, and everyone has a role to play in preventing medication-related harm.

Me: Doctor, what happened to the pharmacology we all suffered through in school? πŸ˜‚

But seriously, this goes beyond correcting one prescription.

Hospital owners and administrators also have a major responsibility for patient safety. A junior doctor, including a house officer, should not be left to independently manage complex clinical situations without appropriate supervision and support.

We are dealing with HUMAN LIVES, not files, not statistics, and definitely not a situation where we say, We will correct the mistake later.

One medication error can have devastating consequences, and unfortunately, some consequences cannot be reversed.

For pregnant patients with hypertension, treatment should be guided by current obstetric and hypertension guidelines, the severity of the condition, gestational age, maternal/fetal status and appropriate clinical supervision.

Common pregnancy-compatible options may include medicines such as labetalol, nifedipine or methyldopa depending on the clinical situation and local guideline.

And please, don't turn this into a doctor versus pharmacist argument.

The real question is:

πŸ‘‰ How can we make our healthcare system safer for the patient?

Because at the end of the day, the patient doesn't care who gets the credit.

THE PATIENT JUST WANTS TO GO HOME ALIVE AND WELL. ❀️

You will feel like the stress since morning need your body to reconstitute ORS and Glucose D inside Water, so that you can be able to rest if any patient didn't come in the night but, you must have it in mind that, not all prayer God answer.

As you are still on gear one, you hear knock knock and you say, who is that and boom, it is patient at 1:30am

After attending to patient, what next, you will be of rethinking that, you have gotten this profession and you can't run back especially if you clamore for service to humanity.

THAT ROUND MARK ON YOUR SHOULDER MAY BE YOUR BABYHOOD VACCINATION AUTOGRAPH πŸ˜‚

Have you ever looked at that circular mark on your shoulder and wondered:

Who signed me here when I was a baby?πŸ˜‚

Or perhaps you asked your mother:

Mummy, who injured me when I was small?

And she simply replied:

Abeg, na injection! πŸ˜πŸ˜‚

Well, there is a good chance that the mark you are seeing is a BCG vaccination scar.

BCG means Bacillus Calmette–GuΓ©rin. It is a vaccine used to protect children against severe forms of tuberculosis, particularly TB meningitis and disseminated/miliary TB in young children.

The interesting part is HOW that little vaccine can leave such a memorable signature. πŸ˜„

BCG is administered into the skin (intradermally), rather than deep into the muscle. After vaccination, a small raised reaction can develop, which may later become a small ulcer and eventually heal into a scar. WHO notes that BCG commonly produces a scar at the vaccination site.

Now let us travel back to the old-school vaccination era. My Aunty baby that morning had this conversation that I can't forget since late 1990's

πŸ‘Ά BABY: Mummy, where are we going?

πŸ‘© MUMMY: We are going for your immunisation.

πŸ‘Ά BABY: Will it hurt?

πŸ‘© MUMMY: No, my baby. πŸ˜‚

Meanwhile, the healthcare worker was already preparing the vaccine.

And after that tiny arm received its BCG.

We went home.

Weeks later:

πŸ‘© MUMMY: Ah! What is this thing on this child's arm?

πŸ‘΅ GRANDMOTHER: Don't touch it! Na the vaccination.

And years later, my aunt daughter has grown into an adult even married, she is now proudly carrying the evidence of that childhood encounter everywhere like life drama! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ We gisted about this mark and I said, let me talk about this.

Now here is the serious medical explanation:

BCG vaccination can produce a characteristic local reaction that eventually leaves a small scar.

The appearance and size of the scar do vary depending on the vaccine strain, the person's response and the technique used to administer it.

WHO notes that not everybody who receives BCG develops a visible scar, so absence of a scar does not automatically mean the person was never vaccinated.

And what about those olden-day injectors? πŸ˜†

Some historical vaccination programmes used multi-puncture devices, while various injection techniques were experimented with.

WHO records that multi puncture BCG administration can produce multiple small papules, while historical jet injector attempts for BCG produced variable lesions and which were not recommended.

So, that beautiful circular mark is not necessarily somebody pressing a pattern onto your shoulder. πŸ˜‚

It could simply be your skin's long-lasting receipt for an important childhood vaccination just like my auntie daughter.

Just note that πŸ‘‡πŸΌ

A BCG scar is evidence of a local vaccination reaction, but the presence or absence of a scar should not be treated as a perfect record of vaccination or as proof of protection. Vaccination records and appropriate clinical information are more reliable.

So next time you see somebody with that round mark, don't ask:

Who bite your shoulder? πŸ˜‚

Just tell them:

Congratulations! Your babyhood vaccination left you a permanent autograph. πŸ˜‚πŸ’‰

Do you have this scar on your shoulder?

NYSC PPA is not the beginning of your life’s excellence.

Sometimes, the place you think you are going to suffer can actually be the place where your biggest blessings are waiting for you. πŸ˜‚

I camped and served in Gombe State during NYSC Batch A, Stream II, 2021/2022. Before we left camp, it was announced that all medical corps members should not attempt to apply for redeployment because it would not be granted.

But you know Nigeria nah πŸ˜‚ Some people still applied, and some of them eventually got it.

Me personally, I had more than enough reasons to apply for redeployment to my State of Origin, especially on health grounds at that time. But I didn't.

Why?

I wanted to experience Northern life. I wanted to see beyond what I had always known and allow myself to experience something different.

So, I was posted to a community pharmacy in Gombe State.

Little did I know that my PPA was not just going to be my Place of Primary Assignment; it was going to become my Place of Personal Attraction. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Just a few weeks after leaving NYSC camp, I met my wife in Gombe. And the funny part? She was actually Batch A, Stream I! πŸ˜‚

NYSC was supposed to be about service to the nation, but for me, it quietly added service to the heart to the curriculum. πŸ˜‚

Aside from my health situation, I also had political connections at that time that could have given me an easier route to secure relocation. I had opportunities to make the move.

But I didn't.

My instinct told me to stay, and today, I am grateful that I listened.

One of the greatest happiness of my life is being married to my wife, and that beautiful story started during my NYSC service year in Gombe.

Even our first son was born in Gombe before my federal employment appointment eventually came from my World Best and Benefactor, Dr. Iziaq Kunle Salako PhD, Honourable Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare.

Sometimes, what you call suffering today may be the address of tomorrow’s blessing.

If I had relocated, perhaps my NYSC story would have been completely different. Maybe I would have returned home with only my NYSC certificate and plenty of pictures from camp. πŸ˜‚

But I stayed.. and Gombe gave me something I never knew I was looking for. ❀️

Addendum:

No course, profession, certificate or career can give you a 100% assurance of wealth or success in life.

Education gives you knowledge. Profession gives you a platform. Connections can open doors. Opportunities can change your direction.

But ultimately, how you recognise, utilise and maximise the opportunities that come your way and, above all, God’s favourcan make a huge difference.

Sometimes, don't be too quick to run away from where life has placed you.

You may be running away from the location of your blessing. πŸ˜‚

Loratadine is a drug that is use to treat allergic conditions such as allergic rhinitis e.t.c.

Whereas due to its tiny appearance, many people think that it is not big enough to cure their conditions so they take overdose.

The adult dose is 10mg once daily and you must not take more than that.

Even there are some drugs to avoid in combination when taking Loratidine because of increased side effects such as dry mouth, dry eyes, constipation, drowsiness etc.

E.g Ketoconazole, Cimetidine, Erythromycin etc and it is except otherwise.

Meanwhile, in case of overdose and you observe slight increase in your blood pressure, increased heart rate.

Go for Activated charcoal as it can serve as first aid after which hospitalization can follow.

Can Loratidine and Chlorphemiramine (Piriton) be used together?

Understand this and you will save yourself from unnecessary stress.

Don't argue with your Pharmacist when their recommendation is to get your medication according to the brands they provided but, you are insisting on the generic name that your prescriber wrote, then you start running from one pharmacy to another.

What you must consider to check if the active pharmaceutical ingredients on your prescription is correspond with the brand you are provided, likewise you check the legitimacy of the drug and the shelf life.

Reduce your stress and arguments on what you have no knowledge about, Infact some will be arguing with a professional because of what they read or watched online from someone that is not professional because, he put on a scrub and white overall doing content.

22/09/2026

Someone recently asked:

Please, I have been searching for this drug called DIETHYLCARBAMAZINE in pharmacies. It is used for parasites like filariasis. Which brand can I ask for?

This reminded me of something I always tell people:

Sometimes, what you are searching for is not necessarily the particular brand name.

Know the generic name of the medicine and allow a qualified Pharmacist to guide you to an appropriate registered brand. Even though, some Medical Doctors and some healthcare professionals don't write generic names mostly on patients prescription.

Lets take the person questions for example, Diethylcarbamazine usually supplied as diethylcarbamazine citrate which is an antiparasitic medicine used in the management of certain filarial worm infections.

WHO documentation also identifies diethylcarbamazine citrate as a medicine used against the parasites responsible for lymphatic filariasis.

Some brand names associated with diethylcarbamazine include:

β€’ Diethyl-50: 50 mg diethylcarbamazine citrate; this is currently listed by NAFDAC in Nigeria.

β€’ Cenocide: 50 mg diethylcarbamazine; NAFDAC has a record for this product, although its listed registration status is inactive.

β€’ Hetrazan: a well-known brand of diethylcarbamazine citrate, including 100 mg tablets in some pharmaceutical markets.

β€’ Banocide: another established brand name associated with diethylcarbamazine.

But please understand this part very well.

If your Doctor or other qualified healthcare professional prescribes DIETHYLCARBAMAZINE, and your Pharmacist recommends a particular brand containing the same active ingredient and appropriate strength, you don't always need to continue running from one pharmacy to another looking for one particular brand name.

The important thing is to confirm:

βœ“ The active ingredient is correct.

βœ“ The strength is correct.

βœ“ The dosage form is correct.

βœ“ The product is properly registered/legitimate.

βœ“ The medicine is appropriate for the condition and for you.

βœ“ You understand exactly how and when to take it.

And please, I am NOT talking about the person who is simply interested in selling you any drug because of money.

I am talking about the qualified Pharmacist or other healthcare professional who is practising according to professional ethics, relevant laws and standards of pharmaceutical practice.

Imagine someone going from pharmacy to pharmacy saying:

Please, I must find Brand X!

Meanwhile, a Pharmacist has already explained:

Sir/Ma, we have the same generic medicine from another registered manufacturer.

Don't reject an appropriate medicine simply because the colour of the pack or the brand name is different.

Brand name can change.

The active ingredient is what matters.

However, don't use this as permission to change medicines yourself. For prescription medicines like diethylcarbamazine, let your healthcare professional determine whether it is actually appropriate for your particular infection and what strength and regimen you need.

And one more important thing you should know is that Diethylcarbamazine is not a general purpose deworming medicine for every type of worm. Its use depends on the particular parasitic infection.

So, Pharmily, next time you are searching for a medicine, don't only remember the brand name.

Learn the GENERIC NAME.

Then let your Pharmacist help you identify an appropriate product.

That little knowledge can save you plenty of unnecessary running around.

I hope you get this? πŸ‘‚πŸΌ
