WORLD BLOOD DONOR DAY: FMC ABUJA, 3AM FOUNDATION MOBILISE RESIDENTS FOR MASSIVE BLOOD DRIVE IN WUSE MARKET

The Hospital Transfusion Committee of the Federal Medical Centre Abuja, in collaboration with the Aisha Abba Abdullahi Memorial Foundation (3AM), today Saturday 13th June 2026 organised a blood donation drive at Wuse Market, Abuja, to commemorate the 2026 World Blood Donor Day.

The exercise, held under the theme “One Drop of Humanity: Give Blood, Save Lives,” attracted a significant number of voluntary blood donors who turned out to support efforts aimed at strengthening blood availability for patients in need.

Speaking during the exercise, the Chairperson of the FMC Abuja Hospital Transfusion Committee, Dr. Aminah Jaiyeola, expressed delight over the impressive turnout of donors, describing their willingness to donate blood as a noble act of service to humanity.

According to her, voluntary blood donation remains a critical component of healthcare delivery, as it helps save lives and ensures that adequate blood is available for emergency cases, surgeries, maternal care, and other medical interventions.

Dr. Jaiyeola commended the donors for their selfless commitment and urged more Nigerians to embrace regular blood donation as a civic and humanitarian responsibility.

Also speaking, the Chief Executive Officer of the Aisha Abba Abdullahi Memorial Foundation (3AM), Hum. Huseina Baba-Inna, expressed satisfaction with the longstanding partnership between her organisation and FMC Abuja.

She noted that FMC Abuja has consistently demonstrated dedication and commitment to providing quality healthcare services to Nigerians, a factor she said has sustained the cordial relationship between the foundation and the hospital over the years.

Baba-Inna called for intensified public enlightenment campaigns on the importance of voluntary blood donation, stressing that increasing the number of donors would significantly address the persistent challenge of blood shortages in blood banks across the country.

She further appealed for stronger collaboration among government agencies, healthcare institutions, development partners, and other stakeholders to promote blood donation and improve access to safe blood in Nigeria.

The blood drive witnessed a positive response from traders, residents, and visitors at Wuse Market, many of whom voluntarily donated blood in support of the life-saving initiative.
World Blood Donor Day is observed annually to raise awareness about the need for safe blood and blood products, while recognising the invaluable contributions of voluntary blood donors in saving lives and strengthening healthcare systems worldwide.

Other partners present during the blood drive included the Nigerian Cancer Society, LAFAJ INNOVATIONS and Medical Women's Association of Nigeria, FCT Chapter.
