All the weather forecasts were wrong today, Sunshine took over.

I have nothing else to say but Kenechukwu.

It’s my beautiful wife’s birthday.
So if I already agreed to meet you today, it’s cancelled.
If you’re expecting a lecture, my dear students, enjoy a free day.
If you’re waiting for my reply to your email, please bear with me.
Everything else can wait, but not the celebration of a phenomenal and loving woman who makes every day brighter for my family and me.

Happy Birthday, My Sunshine.

I’m excited to share my new article published in the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) JCO Global Oncology titled “Cancer in Africa, 2022: Incidence, Mortality, and Age-Patterned Fatality From GLOBOCAN Across 36 Cancer Types.”

In this article, we provided one of the most comprehensive, continent‑wide analyses of cancer incidence, mortality, and fatality patterns across Africa using GLOBOCAN 2022 data.

The findings are crucial, revealing, and deeply consequential for cancer control planning in Africa.
1. Africa carries a disproportionate cancer mortality burden
While incidence is rising, mortality remains unacceptably high, reflecting late diagnosis, limited treatment access, and systemic inequities.

2. Age‑patterned fatality reveals a disturbing trend
Younger Africans face higher fatality rates for several cancers compared to global averages. This is a worrying signal of delayed detection, constrained treatment pathways and a weak cancer control system.

3. Five cancers dominate the landscape
Breast, cervical, prostate, liver, and colorectal cancers account for the majority of cases and deaths, underscoring the need for targeted national strategies.

4. Cervical cancer remains a continental emergency
Despite being almost entirely preventable, cervical cancer continues to kill African women at rates far above the global average.

5. Data gaps persist
Many countries still lack robust cancer registries, limiting the precision of planning and resource allocation.

A few weeks ago, I turned 40, and I decided to raise $4,000 for cancer patients as a way to give back to Oxford- the home of A community that has given me more than I ever thought. I decided to host a Birthday Party without a Cake but with a Purpose. To bring together community, culture, and purpose. Interestingly, we raised $5,175.50.

Three days before the Birthday Fundraiser, only $1,190 had been raised. Three hours to the event on February 15, I was blown away when I was informed that we had raised $4,000+. By the end of the event, we had gotten $5,000 plus. This is truly LOVE & HONOR. Special thanks to everyone who made this possible. 100% of the funds raised will benefit Luna Cares Fund - a local nonprofit supporting cancer patients in Ohio, USA.

Raising funds to support communities and people in need has been a significant part of my life, even when I am in need. Since 2019, I have been using my birthday to raise funds for cancer patients to pay for radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and many other treatment needs. In 2020, while attending Birmingham City University for my MSc, I raised about £1,500 through GoFundMe and an additional €20,000 to establish the first Psychological Support Centre (PSC) for cancer patients in Abuja. In 2022, I raised over N4million for my colleagues battling cancer, and in 2023, 2024, and 2025, I have consistently done the same. Using my birthday to touch the lives of cancer patients has been one of the most fulfilling decisions that I have made since 2019, and I am not relenting.

Special thanks to Holy Trinity Episcopal Church ( )- Oxford, OH, for giving me a platform

Thank you very much for teaching us how to be selfless, kind, hardworking, and logical.

Mama, you prefer to be behind the camera and have others shine.

Madam Khadijat was absolute kind woman, and a nice soul to the core. You wanted the best for everyone. You were a hard worker, a self-taught human and self-motivated.

Rest in Power, Mrs Khadijat Banwo.

Starting the New Year with ‘s Dream Count.

Last year, I read of a lot of academic books and articles, while missing out on some interesting works of art.

Honestly, Chimamanda is truly the best and greatest.
Let’s do more to support young women across the world to be a voice for their communities and their people.

Happy New Year.
