The whirling cardinal points: Identity Vs Difference, Self-expression Vs Self-destruction, War & Conflict Vs Positive Peace, Shared Future Vs Environment 2

The AfroDervish

Welcome to The AfroDervish, curated and directed by Konya Shamsrumi. This captivating one-hour solo theatrical performance seamlessly blends traditional Turco-Persian Sufi-inspired dervish dance with globally infused world mus

ic, enriched by Afro-centric nuances. The poetic narrative is beautifully woven through the verses of Umar Abubakar Sidi, acclaimed for his works such as "The Poet of Dust" (2019) and "Like Butterflies Scattered About By Art Rascals" (2022). The AfroDervish is a thoughtfully crafted performance that orbits around four essential whirling cardinal points: Identity and Difference, Self-expression and Self-destruction, War and Conflict, and Environment and Future. Comprising twelve compass points of meticulously chosen music selections, the show forms a complete cycle, engaging audiences in a mesmerizing journey. Delving into the profound question of building a shared future, The AfroDervish explores the vast spectrum of the human experience—from birth and individual growth to societal development and our interconnected global existence. At its core, the performance centers on universal values like love and humanity, skillfully weaving a rich tapestry of global and cultural emphasis with artistic finesse. The AfroDervish has garnered significant acclaim, drawing attention during the launch of Umar Abubakar Sidi's "Like Butterflies Scattered About by Art Rascals" in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, in 2022. It also made waves at the Abuja International Theatre and Film Festival (ABITFA) and the Hausa International Book and Art Festival in Abuja and Kano in 2023. Join us for an unforgettable experience that transcends boundaries and celebrates the beauty of diversity. About the AfroDervish - Husayn Zaguru:

in the mystic realm of dust,
where wandering winds
whisper secrets untold,
a sacred celebration stirs,
as the aura of eid
gently takes hold,
and the wildest winds
do not forget
the one held in captivity,
still lingering
on a frail hope

-That Night-

just few weeks ago
after we scanned the sky
and found the moon
hanging like a quiet witness,

here I stand,
a wandering troubadour
of moonlight,
seeking
the one sacred night
where the soul
can breathe alone
my heart
longs for seclusion,
for a desert of silence
where no voice interrupts
the whisper of the unseen

i yearn to seclude
in this sacred times
but here,
distractions,
parade as
companions,
bright illusions
dancing
at every corner

so I return inward,
where the noise
cannot enter

there,
in the hidden chamber
of my heart,
I sit with my own
stillness,
a pilgrim of quiet
and like the moon
that glows
without a crowd,
i withdraw
and whirl gently
Into the light
within my heart

"As the sun set over Makurdi, Husayn Zaguru transformed our closing ceremony into a transcendent.

Every strum note and rhythm carried the weight of our ancestors’ wisdom while pushing boldly into the future. We started this festival celebrating stories and art; we ended it experiencing the raw, unfiltered power of cultural expression.“
