Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, accompanied by Senator Adams Oshiomhole, Edo State Deputy Governor,
and other officials, on Friday, October 16th, 2026, visited severe burn victims of a recent fuel tanker explosion receiving care at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).

During the visit, the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu briefed the delegation on the medical care being provided to the remaining survivors out of the eleven initially admitted.

Governor Okpebholo expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, offered condolences to the affected families, and highlighted his administration’s commitment to the citizens’ welfare.

The Chief Medical Director of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu, on Friday received a delegation from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the Edo State Emergency Management Agency (Edo SEMA) who were on ground to visit victims of the recent fuel tanker explosion on the Benin-Lagos road, currently hospitalized at UBTH.

Mr. Joseph Akpofabe, Assistant Chief Relief and Rehabilitation Officer for NEMA, along with his team, joined the visit to assess the condition of those hospitalized with severe burns.

Also present was Mr. Odion Edoseghe, Team Lead for Edo SEMA and Personal Assistant to the Executive Secretary, Hon. Jerry Idahosa, to evaluate the ongoing emergency response and support efforts.

Safe surgery depends on more than the procedure itself. From preoperative assessment and preparation to continuous monitoring during surgery and care throughout recovery, anaesthesia professionals play a vital role in protecting patients at every stage of the surgical journey.

On World Anaesthesia Day, the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) recognises the expertise of anaesthesiologists and other anaesthesia professionals in ensuring patient safety, maintaining physiological stability, managing pain and responding to complications before, during and after surgical procedures.

Their contributions extend beyond the operating theatre to critical care, emergency medicine and acute and chronic pain management, making them indispensable to comprehensive healthcare delivery.

Following the tragic petrol tanker explosion in Oluku, which has resulted in multiple casualties, the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), under the leadership of its Chief Medical Director, Prof. Mrs Idia Nibokun Ize-Iyamu, has responded promptly to provide medical care for victims brought to the hospital.

A dedicated team of medical professionals at UBTH is working round the clock to ensure that affected individuals receive the necessary attention and care during this difficult period.

UBTH has the personnel, facilities and clinical expertise required to manage burn injuries and other complications arising from incidents of this nature. Its capacity to provide emergency assessment, stabilisation and ongoing treatment for burn victims underscores its important role as a major tertiary healthcare institution in Edo State and the wider region.

As the response continues, UBTH remains focused on providing appropriate care to the injured and fulfilling its responsibility to the people of Edo State and beyond.

Our thoughts and sympathies are with the victims, their families and all those affected by this unfortunate tragedy.

Management of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) on Thursday deployed immediate emergency services following a fuel tanker explosion on the Benin-Lagos road near the Oluku axis.

Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu, Chief Medical Director of UBTH, personally coordinated the response team at the accident, emergency, and burns units to treat severe casualties and prevent loss of life.
