Last week, officials from the REACH Malaria Project and the National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP) visited the Institute of Genomics and Global Health (IGH), Redeemer’s University, Ede, as part of preparations for Nigeria’s 2026 Anti-Malaria Drug Therapeutic Efficacy Study (TES).

The visit marked an important step toward strengthening the country’s ability to monitor how malaria parasites respond to treatment and ensure that malaria control strategies remain effective.

During the assessment, the team toured IGH’s laboratory facilities, reviewed biosafety and sample-handling systems, and engaged with researchers and technical staff on the operational processes required to support the study’s molecular analysis component.

Discussions also focused on collaboration, technical coordination, quality assurance, and the role of genomic surveillance in tracking mutations linked to anti-malarial drug resistance.

Under the planned collaboration, REACH Malaria Project and NMEP will provide programme coordination and implementation support, while IGH will support the molecular analysis of dried blood spot (DBS) samples generated during the study.

Beyond the technical assessments, the visit also created an opportunity to strengthen partnerships and align efforts toward evidence-driven malaria control in Nigeria.

Recognition matters, but impact matters more.

We are honoured and proud to see the European Union EDCTP name our Director, Christian Happi, among the 10 Global Health Leaders shaping the future of health research.

For over two decades, EDCTP has supported African scientists tackling infectious diseases while strengthening research capacity and global collaboration.

Through this support, transformative work has been made possible. From confirming Nigeria’s first Ebola case within hours to sequencing Africa’s first SARS-CoV-2 genome, his contributions continue to shape how outbreaks are detected and managed.

In recognition of his global impact, he was named among the TIME100 list of the world’s most influential people in 2025 in the Innovators category.

These recognitions reflects a broader shift. African-led science is not only contributing to global health. It is leading it.
