FACTS ABOUT BLOOD CULTURE TEST

A blood culture test is a laboratory test used to check if bacteria, fungi, or other germs are present in the bloodstream.

Why is it important?

A blood infection can become serious if it is not detected and treated early. Blood culture helps doctors identify the cause of infection and choose the right treatment.

When may your doctor request it?

You may need a blood culture test if you have:

Persistent fever
Chills or shaking
Unexplained weakness
Fast heartbeat
Low blood pressure
Suspected sepsis or serious infection
Fever after surgery, delivery, or a medical procedure

How is it done?

A small blood sample is collected carefully and sent to the laboratory. The sample is placed in special bottles and monitored to see if germs grow.

Important to know

Do not start antibiotics before the test unless your doctor has advised you to. Taking antibiotics before sample collection may affect the result.

At Livingston Hospital and Fertility Centre, we provide reliable laboratory testing to support accurate diagnosis and better treatment decisions.

Your health matters. Early testing can save lives.

Visit Livingston Hospital and Fertility Centre for proper medical evaluation and laboratory services.
