Uburu Health Partners with Sterling Bank to Advance Healthcare Data Infrastructure in Nigeria.

Uburu Health and Sterling Bank have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to introduce Uburu Health’s clinical data infrastructure to healthcare facilities across Sterling’s healthcare customer base.

The partnership is part of Sterling’s HEART strategy, focused on Health, Education, Agriculture, Renewable Energy and Transportation.

For many Nigerian healthcare facilities, digital transformation has traditionally meant starting with a full Electronic Medical Record (EMR) deployment. That can require significant investment in technology, infrastructure, training and workflow changes, while years of valuable patient and operational information remain on paper.

Uburu offers a different path.

Our platform enables healthcare facilities to build a digital data foundation before, during and after EMR adoption. Paper records, including historical archives, can be digitised and converted into structured, machine-readable and interoperable data while facilities continue using existing workflows.

Uburu Health operates in compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 and the Nigeria Data Protection Commission’s General Application and Implementation Directive 2025. We are also registered with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) as a Data Controller and Processor of Major Importance.

We are proud to partner with Sterling Bank to make digital healthcare infrastructure more accessible to facilities across Nigeria.

Meet Our Advisory Board

Associate Professor Julius Kunle Oni (MD, FAOA)

Associate Professor Julius Kunle Oni is a fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon who, until recently, served as Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Director of Global Orthopaedics at Johns Hopkins, where he also directed the Adult Reconstructive Hip and Knee Surgery Fellowship and chaired the Orthopedic Surgery Diversity Council. He earned his MD from Howard University College of Medicine, completed his orthopaedic residency at NYU, and a summa cm laude biology degree from the State University of New York at Plattsburgh. Beyond medicine, he is CEO and Co-Founder of Xsite Capital, a private-equity firm he has helped build, alongside his partners and over 400 investors, to roughly $276 million, and advises top health-technology companies globally.

For Uburu, Ass. Professor Oni’s value is strategic and expansive. He advises on our engagements with private-sector partners, our growth within Nigeria and across the continent, and — critically — on building bridges to top U.S. institutions that stand to benefit from Uburu’s data infrastructure services. His clinical standing at a globally leading institution, combined with proven capital-raising and business-building acumen, opens doors that would otherwise take years to reach.

Meet Our Advisory Board

Associate Professor Emmanuel Ikechukwu Obi (MBBS, FMCPH, MPH)

Associate Professor Emmanuel Ikechukwu Obi is a public-health physician and academic at the College of Medicine, University of Nigeria and the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Ituku-Ozalla. He holds an MBBS from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Fellowship of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, and a Master of Public Health from the University of Nigeria, and a Doctorate in Public Health (DrPH) in Leadership and Management. In April 2020 he was appointed Commissioner for Health of Enugu State, leading the state’s health system through the COVID-19 pandemic, and has served as Chairman of the Health Commissioners’ Forum of Nigeria. His work has included consulting engagements with international organisations including USAID, DFID, the NPHCDA and Family Health International.

That experience is exactly what Uburu needs as we deepen our work with the public sector. Our infrastructure ecosystem already comprises a network of over 650 health facilities and increasingly intersects with state and federal health systems; navigating those relationships well requires someone who has sat on the other side of the table, as the official making the decisions. Ass. Professor Obi brings that insider understanding of how public health institutions think, decide, and partner, enabling Uburu to engage governments across Nigeria and Africa with credibility, sensitivity, and strategic clarity.

Meet Our Advisory Board

Emeritus Professor Ifeoma Joy Okoye is a retired Professor of Radiation Medicine at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu, and the Founding Director of the University of Nigeria’s Centre for Clinical Trials (UNNCECT). She is one of Nigeria’s foremost authorities on clinical-research ethics and regulation: a consultant to on clinical trials and Co-Chair of the Nigerian Clinical Trials Technical Working Group, she has been instrumental in revising Nigeria’s clinical trial regulations to internationally acceptable standards. An Fellow and founder of the Breast Without Spot cancer initiative, she has cultivated deep institutional networks across sub-Saharan Africa and active research collaborations with Stanford, Johns Hopkins and MD Anderson, including work on precision medicine, artificial intelligence in healthcare, and imaging genomics.

For Uburu Health, that combination is rare and directly load-bearing. As we build the data infrastructure that modern operations and research depends on, Professor Okoye’s guidance ensures everything we do clears the highest ethical and regulatory bar, from consent and data governance to research integrity. Her regulatory fluency, her relationships across the continent’s health institutions, and her frontier-research collaborations give Uburu a trusted compass as we scale responsibly across Nigeria and the region.

Phase one: complete! 🎉

Uburu Health celebrates the successful close of the first phase of our $3.5M research partnership with Protege — a collaboration built to improve how frontier AI performs for patients of African ancestry.

Artificial intelligence is transforming medicine. It is helping clinicians diagnose disease earlier, discover new therapies faster, and make healthcare more accessible than ever before. But AI is only as good as those who design, fund, and train it, it is never neutral.

As Pope Leo XIV reminds us in Magnifica Humanitas, “We cannot consider AI to be morally neutral... every technical tool embodies choices and priorities through what it measures, ignores and optimizes.” Thus, every AI system reflects the choices embedded in its design and the manner in which it is trained. When entire populations are underrepresented in its design, the consequences are not merely technical, they are human.

For too long, persons of African ancestry have been significantly underrepresented in the R&D that builds many of the world’s most advanced healthcare AI systems. The result is a future where AI risks performing better for some populations than for others, not because of intent, but because of missing representation.

Every major AI lab is building for healthcare, and AI is moving deeper into healthcare everywhere. The question the pontiff put before the world is whether that future will be built for everyone — or only for those already visible to them. Our answer is that persons of African ancestry will not be an afterthought in the age of AI. They will be in the foundation.

Our thanks to the Protege team for a partnership grounded in a shared conviction: AI that serves humanity must first see all of humanity.

At Uburu Health, we believe Africa should not merely consume AI built elsewhere. We must help shape it. To every stakeholder who made this possible—thank you. Your work is helping build a future where medical AI better reflects the diversity of humanity.

On to phase two.

650+ health facilities. Three pioneering regions. One mission.

Uburu Health is building the data infrastructure that modern healthcare depends on.

Today, our ecosystem comprises more than 650 health facilities across Enugu, Abuja, and Lagos—all working toward a future where healthcare is more connected, more efficient, and more patient-centred.

Our mission is simple: to make modern health data infrastructure accessible for every healthcare provider, regardless of size.

Across our growing network, we are supporting these facilities with lightweight digital infrastructure that strengthens everyday healthcare operations—from patient record management and paper-to-digital conversion to procurement, health insurance, research, compliance, and access to financing.

By preserving and making critical patient records securely available, we’re helping healthcare providers improve continuity of care while supporting compliance with Nigeria’s evolving health information governance and data protection frameworks, including the National Health Act 2014, the Patient Bill of Rights, and the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023.

Technology alone doesn’t transform healthcare but the right infrastructure does, and with every facility that joins our ecosystem, we’re laying another foundation stone for a more connected, resilient, and intelligent health system in Nigeria.

One year ago, in July 2025, we convened Nigeria’s first sub-national, multi-stakeholder digital health engagement — drawing participation from the State House of Assembly Committee on Health, the Office of the Attorney General, the Honourable Commissioner for Health, and heads of federal, state, military, faith-based and private health institutions — to advance the Enugu State health ecosystem into its digital era.

With executive approval already secured, Uburu continues to advance support to facilities state-wide: deploying asset-light digitisation and lightweight data infrastructure to unlock the promise of the State Health Information System, as enshrined in the Enugu State Health Sector Reform Law of 2017.

Earlier last year, Evercare Hospital Lekki signed a strategic partnership with Uburu Health, adopting the advanced UburuAI Health Data Exchange Platform, an NDPR-compliant, end-to-end encrypted system, within its Medical Records Unit. This initiative is intended to enhance clinical decision-making through more comprehensive and timely access to patient information.

For many years, patients in Nigeria have experienced challenges related to fragmented healthcare data, with medical histories often stored in paper records, disconnected digital systems, or not readily available when needed. This lack of coordination can contribute to inefficiencies such as repeated testing, delays in treatment, and occasional gaps in information that may influence patient outcomes.

As part of this initiative, Evercare Hospital Lekki is reinforcing its commitment to delivering high-quality, coordinated care. The hospital recognises the importance of secure and seamless information sharing to ensure patients are viewed and treated holistically, rather than as a collection of disconnected symptoms. With the integration of UburuAI’s Health Data Exchange, clinician’s timely access to consolidated patient histories, diagnostic results, treatment plans, and specialist consultations are now possible, enabling more informed and efficient care at every stage of the patient journey.

With UburuAI, Evercare is now able to:
- Unify fragmented patient histories across providers and visits, ensuring continuity of care.
- Empower clinicians with AI-augmented decision support, reducing medical errors and accelerating diagnostics.
- Protect patient data with end-to-end encryption and is fully NDPR-compliant.
- Enable advanced care by seamlessly linking patients to global clinical trials and breakthrough therapies.

Evercare Hospital Lekki is pleased to contribute to this advancement in partnership with Uburu Health, recognising the vital role that secure, accessible health data plays in supporting better clinical decisions and improving patient care across Nigeria.
