C/Can Advances City-Level Cancer Care Agenda with Advocacy Visit to NBSA
In furtherance of efforts to strengthen city-level cancer care systems in Nigeria, the City Cancer Challenge (C/Can), an international non-profit organisation working to ensure quality cancer care for all, has paid an advocacy visit to the leadership of the National Blood Service Agency (NBSA) in Abuja.
The delegation was led by Dr. Alfredo Polo, Director of Technical Cooperation and Capacity Development, alongside Dr. Lisa Montel, Technical Cooperation and Capacity Development Manager. Also part of the visiting team was Chris Chukwunyere, City Manager, Abuja City Cancer Challenge (C/Can). The visit was part of ongoing engagements to consolidate partnerships critical to improving cancer care delivery at the city level.
C/Can explained that its intervention model focuses on responding directly to locally identified needs. In Abuja, the organisation co-developed a clear, city-owned programme aimed at gradually improving the cancer care ecosystem through a transparent and participatory process involving key stakeholders across the health sector. This approach prioritised solutions considered both high-impact and realistically implementable within existing constraints.
The outcomes of this collaborative process include a five-year roadmap, articulated as a Strategic Plan, as well as the first cycle of implementation activities under the Abuja City Programme. These frameworks are designed to guide coordinated action, optimise resource use, and strengthen institutional linkages across the continuum of cancer care.
The advocacy visit also highlighted the strategic role of the NBSA in cancer management, particularly in ensuring the availability, safety, and rational use of blood and blood products for oncology patients. The Director General of the Agency, Saleh Yuguda, who serves as an executive member of the C/Can city programme, was commended for NBSA’s continued commitment to integrated, multi-sectoral solutions for non-communicable diseases.
Discussions during the visit centred on sustaining collaboration, aligning blood service delivery with oncology care needs, and strengthening systems that support safe transfusion practices for cancer patients.
The engagement reaffirmed C/Can’s belief that durable improvements in cancer outcomes are best achieved through strong institutional partnerships and city-led solutions tailored to local realities.
