Are you getting enough magnesium? 🤔
One nutrient that we often overlook when thinking about our health is magnesium.
Magnesium is a mineral your body needs for many important functions. It is involved in hundreds of processes in the body, including normal muscle and nerve function, blood sugar regulation, blood pressure regulation, and the production of protein, bone and DNA. (Office of Dietary Supplements)
The interesting thing is that you don’t necessarily have to feel sick before your diet starts lacking important nutrients. Sometimes, we are simply not eating enough of the foods that provide them.
So, where can you get magnesium naturally?
🌿 Green leafy vegetables like spinach
🥜 Nuts such as groundnuts/peanuts and almonds
🌱 Beans and other legumes
🌻 Seeds
🌾 Whole grains
🥛 Some milk and dairy products
These are all natural sources of magnesium. (Office of Dietary Supplements)
And this is why I believe we should pay more attention to the quality of what we eat.
It is easy to focus only on filling our stomachs, but being full is not necessarily the same thing as being well-nourished.
Your body needs a variety of vitamins and minerals to function properly, and magnesium is one of them.
That doesn’t mean you should immediately start taking magnesium supplements because you saw this post. Food should generally be your first source of nutrients, and supplements are not automatically necessary for everyone. In fact, taking too much magnesium from supplements can cause side effects such as diarrhea, nausea and stomach cramps. (Office of Dietary Supplements)
So, instead of asking only, “What can I take?”
Start asking:
“What am I eating?”
Are you eating enough vegetables?
Are you eating beans, nuts and seeds?
Are you including whole foods in your meals?
Sometimes, improving our health starts with going back to the basics. ❤️
Your body is working for you every single day. Give it the nutrients it needs to do its job.
