UCH Management Felicitates Miss Yetunde Oladeji on Her Birthday

The Management of the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, led by the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Jesse Abiodun Otegbayo, has felicitated Miss Yetunde Oladeji, a seasoned administrator from the Human Resource Management Department, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, assigned to monitor the 2026 promotion exercise in UCH, on the occasion of her birthday on Monday, October 19, 2026.

The birthday celebration, held at the Hospital’s Boardroom, provided an opportunity for the Management to celebrate Miss Oladeji and acknowledge her contributions to the smooth conduct of the ongoing promotion exercise. Her assignment reflects the confidence reposed in her administrative competence and commitment to duty.

The Management congratulated Miss Oladeji on the milestone, wishing her good health, greater accomplishments, and many more years of fruitful service to the Hospital and humanity. It also prayed that the new year would bring her joy, fulfilment, and continued success in her personal and professional endeavours.

CMD HONOURS OPADOTUN ON HIS MOTHER'S BURIAL

The Management of the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, under the leadership of the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Jesse Abiodun Otegbayo, on Saturday, 17th October, 2026, honoured the Head of Instrument Department, Engr. Olusola Opadotun, at the burial ceremony of his late mother held at Oke Irorun Area, Akanran Road, Ibadan.

The UCH delegation was led by the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Jesse Abiodun Otegbayo, who was accompanied by top management staff, Heads of Departments and Units, colleagues and well-wishers of the Hospital.

In his remarks, the CMD, Prof. Otegbayo, commiserated with Engr. Opadotun and his entire family over the loss of their matriarch, describing it as a painful but glorious exit worthy of celebration.

He commended Engr. Olusola Opadotun for his commitment, diligence and invaluable contributions to the growth and development of the Engineering and Instrument Unit and the Hospital at large, noting that his loyalty and hard work have continued to add value to the institution.

The CMD prayed for the repose of the soul of the deceased and asked God to grant the family the fortitude to bear the irreplaceable loss.

UCH Management Felicitates Mrs. Eze on Golden Jubilee

The Management of the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, led by the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Jesse Abiodun Otegbayo, has felicitated the Director of Administration and Secretary to the Board of Management, Mrs. Oluseyi Rebecca Eze, on the occasion of her Golden Jubilee on Friday, 16th October, 2026.

Prof. Otegbayo, on behalf of the Management and staff of the hospital, congratulated Mrs. Eze on attaining the milestone age of 50, describing it as a significant occasion to celebrate a life of purpose, experience and meaningful contributions. He also acknowledged her dedication to duty and invaluable role in supporting effective administration and institutional development at UCH.

The Chief Medical Director prayed for God’s continued blessings upon Mrs. Eze, wishing her sound health, wisdom, renewed strength and greater accomplishments in the years ahead. He expressed the Management’s best wishes for a fulfilling new chapter marked by peace, happiness and continued success

UCH CMD HONOURS PROF. LAWAL AS HE DELIVERS THE 629TH INAUGURAL LECTURE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN

The 629th Inaugural Lecture of University of Ibadan was delivered by the Dean of clinical sciences of the College of Medicine and a seasoned Pediatric Surgeon, Prof. Taiwo Akeem Lawal at the Trenchard Hall, University of Ibadan on Thursday, 15th of October, 2026.

Professor Lawal, speaking on the topic "Creating Passageways in Dark Alleys: The Bumps, The Spurs and The Speed-Breakers," drew from decades of surgical practice and academic experience to illustrate the challenges and breakthroughs in managing complex surgical obstructions and restoring passageways in the human body particularly in the area of pediatric colorectal surgery.

He traced his academic journey from Abadina Primary School and Methodist Grammar School, Bodija, to his medical training at the University of Ibadan and his residency at the University College Hospital, Ibadan.

The lecture, which attracted members of the university community, medical professionals, students, and well-wishers, highlighted Challenges and Recommendations for the Prevention and Management of Birth Defects

In his concluding remarks, Prof. Lawal highlighted several challenges associated with the prevention, early detection and management of birth defects. These include the lack of a formal national newborn screening programme for birth defects in Nigeria, poor maternal awareness of birth defects, and the low rate of periconceptional folic acid intake.

He also noted that treatment outcomes for birth defects vary depending on the availability of essential resources, such as mechanical ventilation and parenteral nutrition. Furthermore, he highlighted the constraints affecting the practice of paediatric colorectal surgery and the high incidence of surgical site infections in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), despite the availability of published evidence on effective interventions to reduce their occurrence.

To address these challenges, Prof. Lawal recommended the following:

1. Establishment of a comprehensive national newborn screening programme: He advocated the introduction of formal, population-level newborn screening for birth defects across Nigeria.

2. Newborn examination by trained personnel: He stressed that newborn examinations must be conducted by appropriately trained healthcare professionals to facilitate the early detection of birth defects.

3. Promotion of periconceptional folic acid intake: He encouraged increased awareness and uptake of folic acid before conception and during early pregnancy to help prevent certain birth defects.

4. Establishment of regional centres of excellence: He recommended creating specialised regional centres for paediatric colorectal surgery to improve access to quality care and treatment outcomes.

5. Prevention of surgical site infections: He advocated changing gloves and surgical instruments before wound closure as an infection-prevention measure.

He emphasised that implementing these recommendations would help improve the prevention, early detection and management of birth defects, while enhancing the quality of paediatric surgical care in Nigeria.

In his remarks at the reception, the Chief Medical Director of the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Professor Jesse Abiodun Otegbayo, congratulated Professor Lawal on the milestone and described the lecture as insightful and impactful to clinical practice.

Prof. Otegbayo noted that the College of Medicine and UCH have continued to produce distinguished scholars who contribute significantly to medical advancement and patient care.

CMD COMMISSIONS ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLES FOR CHRISTIAN WELFARE INITIATIVE MEMBERS

UCH Christian Welfare Initiative on Thursday, 15th October 2026, commissioned Spiro electric motorcycles at the Cooperative Secretariat for the use of members of staff.

In his address, the President of the Christian Cooperative Society, Mr. Michael Egbeyale, welcomed guests and expressed appreciation to the Chief Medical Director for honouring the invitation. He said the motorcycles were procured to ease the movement of members, reduce the hardship of commuting, and provide an opportunity for additional income for members of the cooperative.

Mr. Egbeyale added that the motorcycles would boost staff morale and enhance mobility. He noted that this is the first batch, with the second batch expected soon. "A fully charged motorcycle can cover 1,000 kilometres. It will benefit staff in commuting to and from work," he said, while advising beneficiaries to always use helmets and avoid reckless driving.

He appealed to the management for the provision of a charging centre where batteries could be recharged.

The Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, Prof. T**i Akingbola, said the motorcycles would be of great benefit to the beneficiaries and would boost their morale and efficiency.

In his remarks, the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Jesse Abiodun Otegbayo, commended the executive members of the Christian Cooperative Society under the leadership of Mr. Michael Egbeyale for prioritising the welfare of their members.

"This is very unique and will be beneficial to members of staff. It is going to be useful. Users should ride carefully, wear helmets, and drive safely," Prof. Otegbayo said.

He urged other cooperative societies to emulate such initiatives that make life easier for their members and thereafter commissioned the motorcycles for use by members of staff.

UCH COMMENCES NEMSAS OPERATIONS

The University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, has commenced full operations of the National Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System (NEMSAS), following a courtesy visit by the hospital’s NEMSAS Operational Committee to the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Jesse Otegbayo, on Tuesday, 13 October 2026.

Speaking on behalf of the Chairman of UCH NEMSAS, Dr Kehinde Ojifini, Dr Olutola Akinsola disclosed that the hospital was digitally onboarded onto the NEMSAS platform on 4 September 2026. He stated that UCH currently has eight well-equipped ambulances ready for deployment, in addition to a brand-new ambulance recently received from the National NEMSAS to strengthen emergency response services.

Dr Akinsola said, “UCH has put all the necessary machinery in place to ensure the successful implementation of this Federal Government initiative. Through NEMSAS, vulnerable victims of trauma, paediatric emergencies and gynaecological emergencies can access free emergency medical care within the first 48 hours of an incident. The scheme also provides free ambulance services to convey patients to appropriate health facilities through the toll-free emergency number, 615.”

He further noted that the hospital was committed to ensuring the effective delivery of the scheme in line with its mandate to provide quality healthcare services.

In his response, the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Jesse Otegbayo expressed delight at the commencement of full NEMSAS operations in UCH. He expressed confidence in the hospital’s capacity to deliver excellent services under the scheme, noting that the initiative aligns with the hospital’s tripartite mandate of healthcare delivery, teaching, and research.

Prof. Otegbayo reaffirmed his unwavering support for the initiative and assured the National NEMSAS, the UCH NEMSAS team, and the people of Oyo State of the hospital’s continued commitment to providing excellent and accessible healthcare services.

The commencement of NEMSAS operations in UCH marks a significant step towards improving access to timely emergency medical care, strengthening ambulance services, and reducing the financial burden of emergency treatment on vulnerable members of the public.

UCH HOLDS EXECUTIVE CAPACITY-BUILDING WORKSHOP

The Management of the hospital on Tuesday, 13th October 2026, organised a one-day executive capacity-building workshop for top management officers at the Ibadan Business School. The workshop, themed “Hospital Leadership and Governance: Building Capacity for Effective Administration,” was aimed at strengthening leadership and administrative capacity among the hospital's top officers.

The training, facilitated by Grace Alone Concepts and Systems Limited, was structured into four modules:

1. Modern Hospital Governance, Administrative Ethics and Public Sector Compliance

2. Operational Systems Management, Workflow Optimisation and Friction

3. Strategic Human Resource Management, Emotional Intelligence (EQ) and Multidisciplinary Team Leadership

4. Strategic Succession Planning, Knowledge Transfer and Institutional Sustainability

Delivering the keynote address, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Grace Alone Concepts and Systems Limited, Dr. Kolawole Oyeyemi, highlighted the importance of continuous staff capacity development and its benefits to healthcare delivery and institutional performance.

According to Dr. Oyeyemi, staff capacity building contributes to improved patient safety and a reduction in medical errors. He further noted that it enhances employee motivation and reduction in medical errors. He further noted that it enhances employee motivation and retention while promoting teamwork and collaboration among healthcare professionals.

The Director of Administration, Mrs. Oluseyi Eze, who was represented by the Head of Hospital Services, Mrs. Dorcas Ajayi, expressed appreciation to the Management of the hospital and the facilitators for organizing the training. She noted that the workshop would enhance leadership development by equipping participants with the necessary knowledge and understanding of their respective roles and responsibilities at every point in time.

The Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC) and Director of Clinical Services, Prof. Olubukola Adesina, in her goodwill message, lauded the initiative, stating that the theme of the workshop was well chosen, as it would provide participants with the knowledge and skills required to enhance effective hospital leadership, strengthen administrative capacity, and improve service delivery.

The Chief Medical Director, Prof. Jesse Abiodun Otegbayo, in his remarks, encouraged all participants to make the most of the training and apply the knowledge gained to improve administrative efficiency and service delivery.

He reiterated the importance of the six (6) Ps of his administration: Patient, Partnership, Participation, Personnel, Project, and Public Perception. Prof. Otegbayo noted that the executive capacity-building workshop aligned with these core priorities and underscored his administration's commitment to effective hospital leadership, good governance, staff development, and improved healthcare delivery.

He thereafter declared the workshop opened.
