UCH RADIATION ONCOLOGY DEPARTMENT INAUGURATES FoRDO

The Department of Radiation Oncology, University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, inaugurated the Friends of the Radiation Oncology Department (FoRDO) on Saturday, August 29, 2026.

Speaking at the event, the Head, Department of Radiation Oncology, Dr. Adebayo Oladeji, expressed appreciation to the hospital management and other stakeholders for their demonstration of friendship and commitment to the initiative. He stated that FoRDO was established to transform the department into a leading center for cancer care, with a focus on training, research, and clinical services. He added that UCH remains a high-quality patient care center providing evidence-based treatment.

In his goodwill message, the Permanent Secretary, Oyo State Ministry of Health, Dr. Kehinde Ayinde, emphasized the importance of supporting patient care through collaborative efforts and partnerships.

The Chairman of FoRDO, Prince Yinka Afonja, in his remarks, called for expanded research efforts to combat the ravaging disease of cancer and improve outcomes for patients.

The Chief Medical Director, Prof. Jesse Abiodun Otegbayo, represented by the Chairman Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC), Prof. Olubukola Adesina, described the establishment of FoRDO as a demonstration of the power of partnership, compassion, and shared commitment to making a meaningful difference in the lives of patients and their families.

“Radiation Oncology remains a critical component of comprehensive cancer management at UCH. We recognize the enormous burden that cancer places on individuals, families, and the healthcare system,” she said.
“Beyond the clinical challenges, many patients and their families are confronted with financial, emotional, and social difficulties throughout the course of treatment. It is therefore important that we continue to explore innovative ways of supporting patients while strengthening the capacity of our institution to provide quality and accessible cancer care,” she concluded.

UCH ORGANISES TWO-DAY WORKSHOP ON EMPATHY CARE TRAINING

The University College Hospital, Ibadan, under the leadership of the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Jesse Abiodun Otegbayo, organised a two-day workshop for staff members on Monday, 24 August and Wednesday, 26 August 2026, at the Prof. Simeon Adebo Continuing Education Centre, UCH, Ibadan.

The workshop was themed “Empathy Care Training: Healing with Compassion.”

In her welcome remarks, the Director of Administration and Secretary to the Board of Management, Mrs. Oluseyi Eze, warmly welcomed participants. She urged them to seize the opportunity to acquire new knowledge, pay close attention to the training, and subsequently cascade the lessons on empathy and positive attitudinal changes to other members of staff.

The first speaker, Dr. Kayode Iyun, Head of the Department of Plastic Surgery, traced the history of medicine and explained how the body, soul, and spirit work together in the healing process of patients. He stated that empathy “involves a dynamic interplay between the physical body, the conscious soul, and the inner spirit.”

He further noted that an essential aspect of being human consists of the body, mind, and spirit, and encouraged participants to be self-conscious, God-conscious, and world-conscious in their service delivery.

In his lecture, Dr. Femi Olowookere, Director of the Chief Tony Anenih Geriatric Centre, noted that compassion is greatly desired by patients and their families. He urged participants to extend compassion not only to patients but also to their relatives and colleagues within the healthcare system. He also advised participants to cultivate good habits, bring about positive behavioural changes, and respond promptly to the needs of the hospital’s clients.

Prof. Yomi Esan, Acting Head of the Department of Psychiatry, lectured on the attitude expected of a good healthcare professional. He said a good healthcare professional demonstrates empathy by seeing the person, not just the illness, respects dignity and privacy, and communicates clearly, honestly, and effectively.

The Chief Medical Director, Prof. Jesse Abiodun Otegbayo, was represented by the Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee, Prof. Olubukola Adesina, who welcomed participants. She urged them to pay active attention to the Train-the-Trainers session and to adopt a positive change in attitude towards patients, their relatives, and colleagues.

She stated that UCH is anchored on the tripod of Clinical Services, Training, and Research, and affirmed that the hospital has the capacity to train trainers in empathy across all three areas. She then declared the workshop open.

The workshop concluded with participants committing to cascade the training to their respective departments in order to foster a culture of compassionate care across UCH.

UCH COMMISSIONS TWO ULTRASOUND MACHINES AND 12KVA SOLAR INVERTER

The Management of the University College Hospital, Ibadan, under the leadership of the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Jesse Abiodun Otegbayo, on Friday, 21st August 2026, commissioned a GE LOGIQ E9 and a GE VOLUSON P8 ultrasound machine, alongside a 12KVA solar inverter, to strengthen diagnostic and patient care services at the hospital.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the Project Engineer, Mr.Tope Adelakun of Nissi Doppler Ultrasound and Medical Services, expressed appreciation to the CMD for approving and awarding the project. He noted that the installation was completed to standard and will significantly improve service delivery.

The Head of the Department of Radiology, Prof. Atinuke Agunloye, commended Prof. Otegbayo, the Hospital Management, and Nissi Doppler Ultrasound and Medical Services for the successful refurbishment and deployment of the ultrasound machines and the UPS.
She further explained that the new equipment will:
1. Strengthen the hospital’s capacity to deliver quality diagnostic services
2. Improve access to functional ultrasound equipment for patients
3. Enhance clinical diagnosis and treatment outcomes
4. Provide better learning and training opportunities for residents, trainees, and medical students

Also speaking, Mrs. Bola Ogunlakin, Head of the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Unit, appreciated Prof. Otegbayo and the Management for their unwavering support for PPP initiatives and continuous capacity-building.
She acknowledged the invaluable contributions of the Legal Department, Biomedical Engineering Department, Finance and Accounts Department, the Chairman Medical Advisory Committee [CMAC] who was represented, and the Director of Administration, for ensuring the seamless ex*****on of the project.

The Head of the Legal Department, Barrister T**i Ogunlade, in her remarks, expressed deep appreciation to the Management for its leadership and commitment to the growth of the hospital.

The Chief Medical Director, Prof. Jesse Abiodun Otegbayo, expressed gratitude to all stakeholders. He specifically commended Mrs. Bola Ogunlakin and Barr. Olubukola Ogunlade, Head of Legal Department, for their roles in facilitating the approval and deployment of the machines.

He noted that the commissioning of the GE LOGIQ E9 Ultrasound, GE VOLUSON P8 Ultrasound, and 12KVA Solar Inverter marks another milestone in UCH Ibadan’s drive towards world-class healthcare delivery.

To ensure uninterrupted service, the CMD announced that the machines will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. To support this, the PPP partner has provided additional infrastructure including:
- Two split-unit air conditioners
- 12KVA Solar Inverter
- 20 Solar Panels with a combined capacity of 30KW

Prof. Otegbayo reaffirmed the Management’s commitment to leveraging strategic partnerships to upgrade facilities, improve patient outcomes, and sustain UCH Ibadan’s position as a centre of excellence.

CMD DECLARES NAPRAS/NBIS CONFERENCE OPEN, CALLS FOR STRONGER COLLABORATION IN BURN AND RECONSTRUCTIVE CARE

The 31st Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference of the National Association of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (NAPRAS) and the 19th Scientific Conference of the Nigeria Burn Injuries Society (NBIS), was commenced on Thursday, August 20, 2026.

The conference was held at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan, with the theme “Quality Improvement in Plastic Surgery” and sub-theme “Comprehensive Cleft Care”.

The keynote address was delivered by Prof. Peter Olaitan, Professor of Burns and Plastic Surgery, University of Osun State (UNIOSUN) . In his lecture, he emphasized the burden of cleft lip and palate among children in Africa, noting that thousands of children are born with clefts annually across the continent. He stressed that many of these children face challenges of feeding difficulties, speech impairment, social stigma and limited access to timely surgical care.

He called for expanded comprehensive cleft care teams, increased public awareness, early intervention, and stronger partnerships to ensure that every African child born with a cleft receives safe, affordable and multidisciplinary treatment that restores function, dignity and quality of life.

The Chief Medical Director, Prof. Jesse Abiodun Otegbayo, ably represented by the Deputy Chairman Medical Advisory Committee (DCMAC) on Clinical Services, Prof. Olusola Olawoye commended the leadership of NAPRAS and NBIS for sustaining the annual platform for knowledge exchange and professional interaction, and acknowledged the Local Organising Committee for hosting the conference.

In her address, she said: “Burn injuries remain a major public health concern due to their link to prolonged hospitalisation, disability, disfigurement, psychological distress and significant socioeconomic consequences for patients and their families.

The theme and scientific focus of this gathering provide professionals the opportunity to examine emerging developments, share experiences, review current practices and develop innovative approaches to the management of complex clinical conditions. The best outcomes are achieved when specialists work together for the benefit of the patient.
Healthcare providers must emphasize continuous professional development, research and innovation tailored to Nigeria’s peculiar realities. UCH remains committed to supporting research, training and partnerships that will improve healthcare delivery.”

Prof. Olawoye urged all participants to maximize the opportunities of this conference by building professional networks, exchanging ideas and establishing partnerships that can continue beyond the event.

UCH MANAGEMENT FELICITATES DR. (MRS) JULIANAH MATTHEW

The Management of the University College Hospital, Ibadan, under the leadership of the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Jesse Abiodun Otegbayo, felicitated with Dr. (Mrs) Julianah Oluwayemisi Matthew,the retired Director of Finance and Accounts, on the occasion of her 60th birthday and retirement celebration held on Saturday, August 22, 2026.

The Director and Head of Finance and Accounts, Dr. Iyiola Ajibade in his remarks applauded Dr. (Mrs) Matthew significant mentorship, which has helped him to foster the celebrants legacy.

The celebration was attended by members of Hospital Management, Directors, Heads of Departments, colleagues, friends, and family members who all paid glowing tributes to her impactful career.

The Chief Medical Director, Prof. Jesse Abiodun Otegbayo in his good will message, commended Dr. Matthew for her years of meritorious and selfless service to UCH and to the nation.

For years, you safeguarded public funds with transparency, accountability, and discipline.

Prof. Otegbayo further lauded her professionalism, mentorship, and unwavering commitment to due process, noting that her stewardship helped to strengthen financial management and accountability at UCH.

UCH Appoints New Head of Public Health Nursing Department

The Management of the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, under the leadership of the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Jesse Abiodun Otegbayo has approved the appointment of Mrs. Olumide Olanike Adewuyi, Deputy Director of Nursing (Public Health), as the Substantive Head of the Public Health Nursing Department, with retrospective effect from May 23, 2026. The appointment follows the mandatory retirement of the erstwhile Deputy Director of Nursing and Head of the Department, Mrs. Adebola G. Oladiran.

The appointment, conveyed in a letter dated August 18, 2026, signed by the Director of Administration, Mrs. Oluseyi R. Eze, for the Chief Medical Director, enjoined Mrs. Adewuyi to ensure proper coordination of the Hospital's tripartite functions of Training, Research and Services. The Management also expressed confidence in her ability to provide effective leadership and ensure the continued growth and development of Public Health Nursing services at UCH.

UCH CMD RECEIVES AWARD

The Chief Medical Director of the Hospital, Prof. Jesse Abiodun Otegbayo, was honoured with an award for Excellence in Procurement, Leadership and Accountability.

The award was presented to him during the inaugural Procurement Capacity Workshop of the Oyo State Chapter of the Association of Public Procurement Practitioners of Nigeria (APPON), held on Tuesday, 18th August, 2026 at Trenchard Hall, University of Ibadan, Oyo State.

Presenting the award, the National President of the Association, Dr. Emem Kanico, said the honour was in recognition of Professor Otegbayo’s outstanding contributions to excellence in procurement, leadership and accountability.
