October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. 💗

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women globally. In 2024, an estimated 2.4 million women were diagnosed and 694,000 died from the disease.

💡 Breast cancer is more likely to be successfully treated when detected and treated early.

Knowing the possible signs matters. These can include:
🔹 A breast lump or thickening, often without pain
🔹 Changes in the size, shape or appearance of the breast
🔹 Dimpling, redness, pitting or other skin changes
🔹 Changes in the ni**le or surrounding skin
🔹 Abnormal or bloody ni**le discharge

🩺 Most breast lumps are not cancer, but any abnormal lump should be checked by a health professional – even if it doesn’t hurt.

🧬 And remember: most women diagnosed with breast cancer do not have a known family history of the disease.

🌸 Know the signs, pay attention to changes and seek care promptly.

Dear Pregnant Women,

Do not let anyone put pressure on top of your abdomen during labour.

This maneuver is called Fundal Pressure or Kristeller maneuver.

There is no strong evidence that this maneuver actually works.

The potential harm outweighs the perceived benefits.

Here's what should be done instead:

- Plan to birth your baby in a hospital with qualified midwives and doctors who practice evidence-based medicine; not those who practice outdated skills.

- Wait for your baby's head to descend properly before you start pushing.

- Push when you have a strong contraction. Your midwife or doctor will give you instructions when it's time to push. Having the urge to push is not necessarily a sign that you should push.

- Change your position. Try kneeling on all-four. Stand up. Walk around, if appropriate. These moves can help reposition your baby for easier delivery.

- If baby is not forthcoming after you have pushed for 30 minutes to 2 hours, other options to help you achieve a safe delivery may include vacuum, forceps or an emergency cesarean section.

Say no to outdated practices during labour!
Stay safe! ✌️

Every year, more than 720,000 people die by su***de and many more attempt it.
💔 Su***de affects families, communities, and entire societies. Each loss is one too many.

Key facts:
🔹 Su***de is the 3rd leading cause of death among 15–29-year-olds.
🔹 73% of global su***des happen in low- and middle-income countries.
🔹 Many su***des happen impulsively during a moment of crisis.

Yet, su***de is preventable with timely, evidence-based interventions.

If you are worried that someone is at risk of su***de, here is what you can do:⁣
💛 Talk to them about how they are feeling⁣
💛 Encourage them to seek help⁣
💛 Check in with them regularly⁣
💛 If they are in immediate danger, contact the emergency services and do not leave them alone!

Su***de is a public health issue, and together, we can prevent it.🎗️

Did you know that excessive bleeding after childbirth (postpartum haemorrhage) can lead to inability to produce adequate breast milk for your baby (lactation failure)?

Here is how...

There is a small gland in the brain called the pituitary gland. It produces a number of hormones which includes PROLACTIN, the pro-lactation hormone. When there is excessive bleeding after childbirth, the blood supply to the pituitary gland is affected. In severe cases, the gland may shut down completely and stop producing all the hormones including prolactin. This is called Sheehan's Syndrome.

The good news is that postpartum haemorrhage is not only preventable but can also be managed if detected promptly.

So now you know. Report any excess bleeding to your doctor or midwife immediately, even after you have been discharged home!

Did you know that breastfeeding can save lives and improve the health of both babies and mothers? 🤱🏻

Breastfeeding:

🔹 Provides all the nutrients a baby needs for the first 6 months.

🔹 Provides antibodies that protect the child against many illnesses like diarrhoea and pneumonia.

🔹 Reduces the risk of obesity and chronic diseases in children.

🔹 Reduces the risk of disease for the mother, including breast and ovarian cancer.

Additionally, breastfed children perform better on intelligence tests. 💡

🌍 Still, only 48% of babies under 6 months are exclusively breastfed.

WHO recommends that mothers:

✔ Start breastfeeding within the first hour after birth.

✔ Exclusively breastfeed for 6 months.

✔ Continue breastfeeding with complementary foods up to 2 years or beyond.

Let’s make sure every child gets the best start in life. 👶👶🏻👶🏾

Every hour, around 30 people lose their lives to drowning. 🌊

That’s more than 300,000 deaths every year. Most are preventable.

Yet, drowning remains one of the world’s most overlooked public health challenges. 🛟

💡 The best way to save a life is by preventing the danger from happening in the first place.

Simple prevention measures save thousands of lives every year:

🏊‍♀️ Learn swimming and water safety skills

👀 Closely supervise young children around water

🏡 Fence pools and cover wells or water containers

🦺 Wear a lifejacket when going on a boat or fishing

⛈️ Check the weather conditions

🚫 Don't consume alcohol or drugs when around water

🤝 Prevention starts with all of us. Share this post to help more people learn how drowning can be prevented.

Dear women in the reproductive age group (15 -49 years),

When was the last time you checked your iron levels?

Regular menstruation (especially if heavy) puts you at risk of iron deficiency.

Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and Non-anemic iron deficiency (NAID) cause various symptoms:

- Headaches

- Chest pain

- Palpitations

- Difficulty breathing

- Brain fog

- Chronic fatigue

- Dry skin

- Hair loss

- Brittle nails

- Sleep disturbances

- Restless leg syndrome

- Depressed mood

Eat foods that are rich in iron: beef, liver, lentils, beans, pumpkin seeds, iron-fortified cereals, cashew nuts, spinach and other green vegetables.

For further information, talk to your doctor!
