World Hepatitis Day β July 28
"Hepatitis: Let's Break It Down"
Every year on July 28, the world observes World Hepatitis Day to raise awareness about viral hepatitis, encourage prevention, promote early testing, and improve access to treatment. Millions of people are living with hepatitis without knowing it because the disease often has no symptoms in its early stages.
What is Hepatitis?
Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver, commonly caused by viruses known as hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E. Hepatitis B and C are the most serious forms because they can become chronic, leading to liver cirrhosis, liver failure, or liver cancer if left untreated.
How Can Hepatitis Be Prevented?
Get vaccinated against hepatitis A and B.
Practise safe s*x and avoid sharing needles, razors, or toothbrushes.
Ensure blood transfusions and medical procedures are done with properly screened blood and sterile equipment.
Maintain good hand hygiene and consume safe food and clean water.
Get tested, especially if you have risk factors or think you may have been exposed.
Management of Hepatitis
If diagnosed with hepatitis:
Seek medical care promptly and follow your healthcare provider's treatment plan.
Take prescribed medications as directed.
Avoid alcohol and substances that can further damage the liver.
Eat a balanced, nutritious diet and stay physically active as advised.
Attend regular medical check-ups to monitor liver health.
Encourage close family members and partners to get tested and vaccinated where appropriate.
Take Action Today
Early detection saves lives. Hepatitis is preventable, treatable, and, in the case of hepatitis C, often curable. Don't wait for symptomsβknow your status, protect yourself, and help spread awareness.
Together, we can eliminate hepatitis as a public health threat.
Get tested. Get vaccinated. Get treated. Protect your liver, protect your life.
