Myth: Treatment is a quick fix.

"He's been receiving treatment for two months, and nothing has changed. We have to take him out of the facility."

"We need more time to treat him. He can't be healed in two months. These things take time."

Our psychologist said this to a family member who'd grown impatient with how slowly treatment was progressing. In their mind, two months should have been enough. They expected recovery to work like malaria treatment: a few doses, and he's fine.

What most people don't know is that treatment for substance use disorders doesn't work that way.

It involves the neurological, the psychological, the physiological, and the social, all at once.

Because so much is being repaired at the same time, no phase of treatment can safely be rushed.

Fact: recovery is a long-term journey.

This isn't just something we say to manage expectations. It's backed by research.

A landmark study published in JAMA in 2000 examined drug dependence the same way medicine examines other chronic illnesses, like type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and asthma.

The researchers found that drug dependence follows a similar pattern: it develops from genetic and environmental factors, it produces lasting changes in the body, and like these other conditions, it requires ongoing management rather than a single cure.

Research from the U.S. National Institute on Drug Abuse backs this further. Their data shows that most people need at least three months in treatment before significant, lasting improvement shows up, and that outcomes keep improving the longer someone stays engaged in care.

Treatment that ends too early is one of the most common reasons people relapse.

Recovery takes time. It isn't cast in stone.

Myth: You can't work while getting treatment.

A patient's family came to NetWealth Medicals to inquire about treatment. After the consultation, they agreed that they liked our service and would be bringing the patient soon. We expected a call back to move forward. Instead, they went quiet.

Our support team followed up to ask what happened.

"We don't want him useless for a year because he's in treatment," the family member admitted. "We can't allow that, because of what it'll do to the family's image, and how tough it'll be for us financially."

"Is that why you didn't call back?" our rep asked, surprised.

"Yes. That's why we didn't bring him."

The rep explained something the family didn't know: treatment doesn't have to mean disappearing from life for a year.

Fact: outpatient and flexible options exist.

Myth: Addiction only involves illegal drugs.

"He only takes prescribed medications, how can you say he's addicted?"

That was a heated conversation with a few friends last week. We'd been talking about people who abuse drugs, and someone brought up a former classmate, now a nurse in the UK, who kept buying a particular prescribed medication. So much of it that his family had started to worry.

I said he might be addicted.

They didn't agree.

"Isn't addiction for people who take illicit drugs? Co***ne and the likes?"

I explained that addiction isn't limited to illicit or "hard" drugs. It can happen with prescription medication too.

When someone takes more than the prescribed dose, keeps taking a drug after the condition it treated is gone, or continues without a doctor's approval, that's addiction. Many people get hooked on prescription drugs after starting them for a completely legitimate medical reason.

Fact: alcohol, tramadol, and codeine misuse are major issues in Nigeria.

Addiction doesn't care what's in the bottle. Prescribed or illicit, hard or soft, it doesn't matter. The moment someone depends on a substance just to function normally, and can't function without it, that's addiction.

A person can get addicted to painkillers and sleeping pills the same way they get addicted to co***ne. They can get addicted to alcohol the same way they get addicted to caffeine. What matters isn't the substance's legal status. It's the dependency.

Myth: Willpower or prayer alone is enough.

Before F** came to our centre, his family had taken him to prayer houses and spiritual centres, one after another.

They did what most Nigerian families do first: try to pray away a psychiatric condition.

For a while, it seemed to work. Two days sober. Then he was back in the same rabbit hole.

So they prayed harder. Combined prayer houses, prayer chains, denominations, anything that might reach him.

But the more they tried to save him, the more he drowned.

"This addiction must be spiritual," some said.

Others called him wicked, not sick, because he wasn't finding enough willpower to spare his aging parents the stress of caring for him.

Doesn't he know the burden he's putting on his family? they whispered.

He's inconsiderate, they added.

But F** wasn't any of those things.

He was a person struggling with a substance use disorder.

Fact: spiritual, clinical, and social support work together.

F** isn't wicked. He isn't inconsiderate. What he needed wasn't more prayer and more shame. It was all three: spiritual support, clinical treatment, and social care, working together.

Substance use disorders don't respond to one solution. They respond to people being seen as whole, not fixed by a single intervention.
