LOCUS OF CONTROL AND MENTAL HEALTH
Locus of control refers to the degree to which individuals believe they have control over life events.
This psychological concept, introduced by psychologist Julian B. Rotter, plays a significant role in emotional and mental well-being.
An internal locus of control is associated with better psychological health. Individuals believe their actions influence outcomes, which fosters confidence, resilience, and motivation.
This sense of responsibility promotes effective coping strategies, reduces stress, and lowers the risk of anxiety and depression. People with an internal locus are also more likely to seek support and take proactive steps during difficult times.
On the other hand, an external locus of control occurs when individuals attribute life events to luck, fate, or external forces beyond their control.
This outlook can increase vulnerability to mental health challenges. It may lead to feelings of helplessness, low self-esteem, poor coping skills, and heightened stress, which can worsen symptoms of anxiety and depression.
While not everything in life is within our control, developing a healthier, more balanced internal locus of control strengthens self-efficacy, emotional stability, resilience, and overall mental well-being.
